Golden obsidian gem

Golden obsidian, also known as gold glitter obsidian or golden glitter obsidian, is a rock containing patterns of gas bubbles left over from a lava flow, aligned along layers formed by the molten rock flow before cooling.

These bubbles have interesting effects, they look like golden shimmer.

Natural volcanic glass was formed in the form of poured igneous rock.

It forms when felted lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth.

It can usually be found at the edge of rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian plumes, where the chemistry and high silica content results in a high viscosity that, when cooled rapidly, forms natural lava glass.

The inhibition of atomic diffusion through this very sticky lava explains the lack of crystal growth. The stone is hard, brittle and amorphous, so it cracks with very sharp edges. In the past, it was used in the manufacture of cutting and stabbing instruments, and was also experimentally used as surgical scalpel blades.

Golden obsidian. mineral-like

It is not a true mineral because it is not crystalline like glass and its composition is too variable to be considered a mineral. Sometimes it is referred to as mineraloids.

Although golden obsidian is usually dark in color, like base rocks such as basalt, obsidian has an extremely felsic composition. Obsidian is mainly composed of SiO2, silicon dioxide is usually 70% or more. Crystalline rocks with an obsidian composition are represented by granite and rhyolite.

Since obsidian is metastable at the Earth's surface, glass eventually turns into fine-grained mineral crystals; no obsidian older than the Cretaceous has been found. This degradation of obsidian is accelerated in the presence of water.

Having a low water content, when newly formed, usually less than 1% water by mass, obsidian gradually hydrates under the influence of groundwater, forming perlite.
