Stichtite properties

Mineral, chromium and magnesium carbonate; formula Mg6Cr2CO3(OH) 16 4H2O. Its color varies from pink to lilac and deep purple. It is formed as a product of the transformation of chromite containing serpentine. Occurs in combination with barbertonite (hexagonal polymorph Mg6Cr2CO3(OH) 16 4H2O), chromite and antigorite.

Discovered in 1910 on the west coast of Tasmania, it was first recognized by A. S. Wesley, former chief mining chemist for the Lyell and Railway Company assembly. It was named after Robert Karl Sticht, a mine manager.

Sources of

Seen in conjunction with green serpentine on Stichtit Hill near the extended Dundas Mine, Dundas is east of Zeehan and also on the south shore of Macquarie Harbour. It is on display at the Zeehan West Coast Pioneer Museum. The only commercial mine is located on Stichtit Hill.

Stones have also been reported from the Barberton area in the Transvaal; Darwendale, Zimbabwe; near Bou Azzer, Morocco; Cunningsburg, Shetland, Scotland; Langbaan, Värmland, Sweden; Gorny Altai, Russia; Langmuir Township, Ontario and Megantic, Quebec; Bahia, Brazil; and Keonjhar district, Orissa, India

Carbonate

Rare and unusual carbonate. It forms mainly as dense masses or accumulations of mica, and is in sharp contrast to most carbonates, which form large and abundant regular crystals. Its most common locality is near Dundas on the island of Tasmania, and virtually all examples sold in stone shops and mineral dealers come from Dundas.

The color of the stone varies from dull purple-pink to purplish red. Its color, although similar in description to other pink-red carbonates, is indeed different in itself when viewed together with other pink carbonates.

Rhodochrosite

Rhodochrosite is much redder and has white veins, spherocobaltite is more pinkish, and stichtite is more purple. An additional difference is also the fact that the other two carbonates are more crystallized and glassy, and the Stone comes from only a few sources. A massive green serpentine is usually associated with this stone, and the combination of green and purple can be an eye-catching pattern or ornamental stone carving.
