Obsidian volcanic glass

Obsidian is a natural volcanic glass formed as a pressed igneous rock.

Obsidian is formed when felted lava extruded from a volcano cools rapidly with minimal crystal growth. It is commonly found within rhyolitic lava flows known as obsidian flows, where the chemical composition: high silica content causes high viscosity, which upon rapid cooling forms natural lava glass.

The inhibition of atomic diffusion through this very sticky lava explains the lack of crystal growth. Obsidian is hard, brittle and amorphous. Therefore, it breaks with sharp edges. It has been used in the past in the manufacture of cutting and stabbing instruments, and has also been used experimentally as surgical scalpel blades.

Obsidian properties of a starry night

Obsidian is formed from rapidly solidified lava, which is the source material. Obsidian production can occur when felsic lava cools rapidly at the edges of a lava or volcanic dome, or when lava cools on sudden contact with water or air. Intrusive formation of obsidian may occur as the felsic lava cools along the rim of the dike.

Obsidian looks like a mineral, but it is not a real mineral because, like glass, it is not crystalline. Moreover, its composition is too variable to be classified as a mineral. Sometimes it is referred to as mineraloids. Although obsidian is usually dark in color, like base rocks such as basalt, the composition of obsidian is extremely acidic.

Obsidian is composed primarily of silicon dioxide, typically 70% or more. Granite and rhyolite are crystalline rocks of similar composition. Since obsidian is metastable at the Earth's surface, the glass eventually turns into fine-grained mineral crystals; no obsidian older than the Cretaceous has been found.

This transformation of obsidian is accelerated in the presence of water. Although newly formed obsidian has a low water content, typically less than 1% by weight of water, it undergoes gradual hydration under the influence of groundwater to form perlite.
