Spectrolite is an unusual variety of labradorite feldspar.

Richer gamut of colors than labradorite (which only shows blue-grey-green hues) and high labradorescence. It was originally a trade name for a material mined in Finland, but is sometimes misused to describe labradorite when richer colors are present, regardless of location: for example, labradorite with the same play of colors has also been found in Madagascar.

The difference between Finnish spectrolite and other labradorites is that the crystals of the former have a much stronger color than other labradorites, due to the black base color of feldspar; other labradorites tend to have a clear base color. This stone is often cut as a lapidary cabochon, similar to the common labradorite, to enhance the effect and used as a gemstone.

The Finnish geologist Aarne Laitakari (1890–1975) described this peculiar rock and searched for its origin for many years when his son Pekka discovered a deposit at Ülamama in southeastern Finland while building the fortification of the Salpa Line in 1940. The Finnish stone has an exceptionally bright iridescence and a full range of colors, hence the name of this stone was coined by Elder Laitakari.

After World War II, it became an important local industry. In 1973, the first gemstone cutting and polishing workshop was opened in Ylämaa.

Hardness from 6 to 6.5 on the Mohs scale and specific gravity 2.69 - 2.72.

Very high quality dark-based cabradorite is found only in Finland. The name "Spectrolite" is a trademark given to this material by the Finns, and only this material can really be called by this name.
