They are all monoclinic, tending to pseudohexagonal crystals, and have a similar chemical composition. Almost perfect cleavage, which is the most characteristic feature, is due to the hexagonal, plate-like arrangement of atoms.

The name comes from the Latin word mica meaning crumb and is probably influenced by micare to shine.

The emergence of mica sheets

It is widespread and occurs in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary systems. Large crystals used for various purposes are usually extracted from granitic pegmatites.

Until the XNUMXth century, large crystals were quite rare and expensive due to the limited supply in Europe. However, their price plummeted when large reserves were discovered and mined in Africa and South America in the early XNUMXth century.

The largest documented single-crystal phlogopite was found at the Lacey Mine, Ontario, Canada, measuring 10 m × 4.3 m × 4.3 m (33 ft × 14 ft × 14 ft) and weighing approximately 330 tons (320 long tons, 360 short tons). Crystals of similar size have also been found in Karelia, Russia.

The British Geological Survey reported that in 2005 the Koderma district in the state of Jharkhand, India, had the largest deposits in the world. China was the largest producer, accounting for almost a third of the global share, followed by the US, South Korea and Canada.

Large deposits of sheet metal were mined in New England from the 19th to the XNUMXth century. Large mines existed in Connecticut, New Hampshire and Maine.

Production of mica stones

Scrap and flakes of mica are produced all over the world. In 2010, the main producers were Russia (100,000 68,000 53,000 t), Finland (50,000 20,000 15,000 t), South Korea (350,000 t), South Korea (XNUMX t), France (XNUMX t), and Canada ( XNUMX XNUMX tons). The total world production was XNUMX tons, although there was no reliable data for China.

Most of the sheet is produced in India (3,500 tons) and Russia (1,500 tons). Flakes come from several sources: a metamorphic rock called schist, which is a by-product of processing feldspar and kaolin resources, sediments, and pegmatite deposits.

The most important sources of sheet metal are pegmatite deposits. Leaf prices vary by grade and can range from less than $1/kg for low quality to over $2,000/kg for top quality.
