Mica is a pseudohexagonal crystal.
They are all monoclinic, tending to pseudohexagonal crystals, and have a similar chemical composition. Almost perfect cleavage, which is the most characteristic feature, is due to the hexagonal, plate-like arrangement of atoms.
The name comes from the Latin word mica meaning crumb and is probably influenced by micare to shine.

It is widespread and occurs in igneous, metamorphic, and sedimentary systems. Large crystals used for various purposes are usually extracted from granitic pegmatites.
Until the XNUMXth century, large crystals were quite rare and expensive due to the limited supply in Europe. However, their price plummeted when large reserves were discovered and mined in Africa and South America in the early XNUMXth century.
The largest documented single-crystal phlogopite was found at the Lacey Mine, Ontario, Canada, measuring 10 m × 4.3 m × 4.3 m (33 ft × 14 ft × 14 ft) and weighing approximately 330 tons (320 long tons, 360 short tons). Crystals of similar size have also been found in Karelia, Russia.
