The value of rutile topaz

Rutile topaz with yellow acicular inclusions of the mineral limonite. Rutile topaz looks very similar to rutile quartz, hence the name rutile topaz. However, the name is misleading because unlike rutile quartz, which contains the mineral inclusions of rutile, rutile topaz inclusions are not rutile topaz, but rather limonite.

Pure topaz is colorless and transparent, but usually colored by impurities, typical topaz is burgundy, yellow, light grey, red-orange, or bluish brown. It can also be white, light green, blue, gold, pink (sparse), red-yellow, or opaque to transparent/translucent.

Orange topaz, also known as noble topaz, is the traditional birthstone of November, a symbol of friendship, and the birthstone of Utah.

Imperial topaz comes in yellow, pink (rarely if natural), or pinkish-orange. Brazilian imperial topaz can often have a light yellow or dark brown hue, sometimes even purple. Many brown or pale topazes are considered light yellow, gold, pink, or purple. Some imperial topaz can fade in the sun for a long time.

Blue topaz is the state gem of Texas in the United States. Naturally occurring blue topaz is quite rare. Typically colorless, gray or light yellow and blue materials are heat-treated and irradiated to produce the more desirable dark blue color.

Topaz is commonly associated with siliceous igneous rocks such as granite and rhyolite. It usually crystallizes in granitic pegmatites or in steam pits in rhyolitic lava flows, including Mount Topaz in western Utah and Chivinar in South America.

It can be found along with fluorite and cassiterite in various regions including Ural and Ilmen in Russia, Afghanistan, Sri Lanka, Czech Republic, Germany, Norway, Pakistan, Italy, Sweden, Japan, Brazil, Mexico, Flinders Island, Australia, Nigeria and United States.

Brazil is one of the largest producers of topaz, some clear topaz crystals from Brazilian pegmatites can be boulder-sized and weigh hundreds of pounds. Crystals of this size can be seen in museum collections. Topaz from Aurangzeb, observed by Jean Baptiste Tavernier, weighed 157.75 carats.

American gold topaz, a newer gemstone, weighed 22,892.5 carats in 1980. Large live specimens of blue topaz from the St. Annas in Zimbabwe were found in the late XNUMXs. XX century.
