Nuummite is a rare metamorphic stone composed of the amphibole minerals gedrite and antillite. It is named after the Nuuk region in Greenland where it was found.
Description
It is usually black and opaque. It is composed of two amphibians, gedrite and anthophyllite, which form lamellar extrusion, giving the rock its characteristic iridescence. Other common minerals in the rock are pyrite, pyrrhotite, and chalcopyrite, which form brilliant yellow streaks on polished specimens.
In Greenland, the rock was formed by two successive metamorphic imprints of originally igneous rocks. The invasion took place in the Archaean about 2800 million years ago, and the metamorphic record has been dated between 2700 and 2500 million years ago.

The stone was first discovered in 1810 in Greenland by the mineralogist K. L. Gieseke. It was scientifically determined by OB Bøggild between 1905 and 1924.
