Lilac jasper, an accumulation of microgranular quartz or chalcedony and other mineral phases, is an opaque, impure variety of silica, usually red, yellow, brown or green, rarely blue. The usual red color is due to iron inclusions.

Jasper has a smooth surface and is used for decoration or as a gemstone. It can be polished to a high shine and is used for items such as vases, seals, and snuff boxes. The specific gravity of jasper is usually between 2.5 and 2.9.

Types of jasper

Jasper is an opaque rock of almost any color due to the mineral content of the original sediment or ash. The consolidation process creates flow models and sediment models in primary sediments rich in silica or volcanic ash. It is believed that hydrothermal circulation is necessary for the formation of jasper.

Jasper can be modified by diffusion of minerals along a fracture to give the appearance of vegetative growth, i.e. dendritic. The original materials often break or become distorted after being embedded into various patterns, which are then filled in with other colored minerals. Airing over time will create highly pigmented superficial skin.

Figurative jaspers show combinations of patterns such as stream streaks or patterns of water or wind deposits, dendritic or color variations, resulting in what appears to be scenes or images in the carved area.

Diffusion from the center gives a characteristic spherical appearance, leopard jasper, or linear kink bands like leisegang jasper. From the healed crushed rock, the collected broken jasper is obtained.
