Danburite stone
It is named after Danbury, Connecticut, USA, where it was first discovered in 1839 by Charles Upham Shepard.
The stone can be of different colors from colorless to very light pink and from light yellow to brown. But usually only the colorless danburite is always cut as a gemstone.
It has a Mohs hardness of 7 to 7.5 as well as a specific gravity of 3.0. The mineral also has an orthorhombic crystalline form. It is usually colorless, like quartz, but can also be pale yellow or yellowish brown. Usually found in contact-metamorphic rocks.
Mineral classification Dana is classified as sorosilicate, while it is listed as tectosilicate in the Strunz classification scheme. Both terms are correct.
Its crystalline symmetry and shape are similar to topaz; however, topaz is a non-silicate containing calcium fluoride. Transparency, elasticity and high dispersion of danburite make it valuable as a faceted stone for jewelry.
