Amazonite is a rare mineral. In the past, it was mined almost exclusively from the Miass region in the city of Ilmenskiye Gory, 50 miles southwest of Chelyabinsk, Russia, where it occurs in granite rocks.

Recently, high quality crystals have been obtained at Pikes Peak, Colorado, where they have been found in association with smoky quartz, orthoclase and albite in coarse granite or pegmatite.

Crystals can also be found in Crystal Park in El Paso County, Colorado. Other US locations they produce include the Morefield Mine in Amelia Courthouse, Virginia. It also occurs in pegmatite in Madagascar, Canada and Brazil.

Amazonite coloration

Due to its light green color after polishing, the stone is sometimes cut and used as a cheap gem, although it breaks easily and loses its luster due to its softness.

For many years, the source of the amazonite color remained a mystery. Naturally, many assumed that the color came from copper, since copper compounds often have blue and green colors. More recent research suggests that the blue-green color is due to the small amount of lead and water in the feldspar.

Feldspar

Feldspar (KAlSi3O8 - NaAlSi3O8 - CaAl2Si2O8) is a group of tectosilicate rock-forming minerals that make up about 41% of the mass of the Earth's continental crust.

Feldspar crystallizes from magma as veinlets in both intrusive and continuous igneous rocks and also occurs in many types of metamorphic rocks. A rock composed almost entirely of calcareous plagioclase is known as anorthosite. Feldspar is also found in many types of sedimentary rocks.

This group of minerals consists of tectosilicane. The compositions of the main elements in ordinary feldspars can be expressed in three finite elements:

– potassium feldspar (K-spar) terminal KAlSi3O8

– albite terminal NaAlSi3O8

— anorthic tip CaAl2Si2O8
