Helmet of reverence (EGISHYALMUR)
The Helm of Awe is one of the most mysterious and powerful symbols in Norse mythology. The very sight of this symbol is scary. This sign consists of eight arms that look like tridents emerging from a central point - protecting it and going on the offensive against any hostile forces that surround it.
It was probably used as a magic symbol or spell.
This interpretation is supported by a spell called "There is a simple helmet of awe", which we find in the collections of Icelandic legends collected by the great Jon Arnason in the XNUMX century. The spell reads:
Make a helmet of awe out of lead, press the lead mark between your eyebrows and say the formula:
I wear a helmet
between my bridges!
I wear a helmet of awe
between my eyebrows!
