Yggdrasil, the World Tree or "Tree of Life"

In the center of Asgard, where the gods and goddesses live, is Yggdrasil . Iggdrasil - tree of life , everlasting green ash; the branches stretch over the nine worlds of Scandinavian mythology and extend upward and over the sky. Yggdrasil has three huge roots: the first root of Yggdrasil is in Asgard, the house of the gods is located next to the aptly named Urd, here the gods and goddesses hold their daily meetings.

The second root of Yggdrasil goes down to Jotunheim, the land of giants, next to this root is the well of Mimir. The third root of Yggdrasil descends to Niflheim, near the well of Hvergelmir. Here the dragon Nidug devours one of the roots of Yggdrasil. Nidug is also famous for sucking blood from corpses that arrive in Hel. At the very top of Yggdrasil lives an eagle, an eagle and a dragon Nidug - the worst enemies, they really despise each other. There is a squirrel named Ratatatoskr that runs around the ash tree for most of the day.

Ratatatoskr does his best to keep the hatred between the eagle and the dragon alive. Every time Nidhug utters a curse or insult at the eagle, Ratatatoskr runs up to the top of the tree and tells the eagle what Nidhug has just said. The eagle also speaks harshly about Nidhuga. Ratatatoskr loves to gossip, so the eagle and dragon remain constant enemies.
