Masons greatly revere the Moon, considering it the biblical ruler of the night and a reminder of regularity of behavior The Masters of the Lodge. But there is also a higher symbolism attributed to the Moon: she represents the senior caretaker in the West, which is an Egyptian tradition that links the moon to this direction. 

Some Masonic researchers believe that the symbolism of the moon should be parallel to the "Venerable Master", which is associated with the Sun and the Ionian Pillar of Wisdom.
