Jed

Jed

Jed Is a very ancient Egyptian symbol of stability. It resembles a low pillar with four horizontal platforms at the top. This is a symbolic image of a tree in which, according to myth, Osiris was buried after his death by the hand of his brother Set.

The Jed Pillar was an important element in the ceremony known as the "Resurrection of the Jed", which was part of the Egyptian Pharaohs' Jubilee Celebrations (Heb-sed). The act of raising Jed has been explained as a symbol of Osiris' victory over Set.

The hieroglyph Jed is often found along with the symbol melt (also known as the knot of Isis), which translates as life and prosperity. When used together, djed and tiet can represent the duality of life.
