Bull symbol in Africa

BULL

The bull mask shown is from the Dan people of eastern Liberia and the west of the Ivory Coast. Bulls in Africa were viewed primarily as extremely powerful animals. Very few managed to kill this powerful and hardy animal on the hunt, which inspired great respect. If any of the men possessed the qualities inherent in a bull, he was often depicted as this animal.

This mask was supposed to facilitate the spell with the powers of the bull - this was a frequent ritual of many African tribes. Bulls were often associated with the power of witches, so their spirits were summoned in order to drive out anger from society.
