Chicken, rooster: care

This gilded umbrella head is made by the craftsmen of the Ashanti people. It depicts a hen with chickens; the sun umbrella itself belonged to an influential person of the Ashanti people. Such an umbrella could be up to four meters in diameter. This symbolically was supposed to remind the owner of the umbrella that he should be a good ruler, should take care of his people and resist enemies.

Another allegory is the adage that a hen can sometimes step on its chicks, but it never hurts them. The chicken in this case serves as an allegory of ingenuity and care.

In the Kingdom of Benin, there is a figurine of a rooster, cast in bronze, which once served as a symbol of the mother queen.
