Are you using a mixing sponge incorrectly?

There's a reason blending sponges are so popular. Plush, soft sponges can give skin a radiant, airbrushed look that will outshine all social media filters if used correctly. It would seem nothing complicated, but many mistakes can be made along the way. Since we don't want to see you make a serious make-up and skin care faux pas, we warn you. Are you to blame for these common sponge application mistakes? Keep reading to find out!

Mistake #1: You are using a dirty sponge

One of the biggest mistakes people make when using a makeup sponge is not cleaning it after every use (or at least once a week). There are several reasons why this step is critical. First, your sponge is a breeding ground for pore-clogging bacteria and dirt, which can easily transfer to your complexion when you apply makeup. Also, product buildup on the sponge can make it less effective at applying makeup. Not to mention it's just disgusting. If the same sponge has been used for more than three months, discard it and replace with a new one.

Mistake #2: You scrub too hard

We know we told you to clean your makeup sponge, but don't overuse it! Use gentle massaging motions with the cleansing solution to squeeze out excess product. If you rub too hard, the fibers may break and/or stretch too much.

Mistake #3: You only use it for makeup

Think your beauty sponge is just for applying makeup? Think again! You can use a clean - keyword: clean - sponge to apply skin care products instead of your fingers. Lightly dampen the sponge before using it to apply serum, sunscreen, and moisturizer. Be sure to use a different sponge for each product - more on that below.

Mistake #4: Using the same sponge for multiple products

Makeup sponges have come in many shapes, sizes, and colors—and for good reason. Each sponge is designed to give you the best application of product, whether powder, liquid or cream, so it's worth investing in a few different sponges. We recommend using color coding for sponges so that products and their textures do not mix.

Mistake #5: You're rubbing instead of tapping

Unlike a makeup brush, the sponge is not meant to be rubbed across the face. It's not a disaster if you do, but it won't help you achieve a natural, airbrushed look. Instead, gently tap the sponge on the skin and blend with quick patting motions, also called “dotting”. This applies makeup to the skin and blends it at the same time. Win-win.

Mistake #6: You store it in a damp and dark place

A cosmetic bag seems like the most logical place to store a cosmetic sponge, but it's actually not a good idea. Since it is dark and closed, mold and bacteria can start to form on the sponge, especially if it is damp. Keep the sponge in a breathable mesh bag constantly exposed to oxygen and light.

Mistake #7: You run it dry

A good way to make sure your makeup sponge is streak-free and moist is to dampen it with water before using it. However, there are a few exceptions where a dry sponge is more practical, such as when applying powder. Blending powder is a little easier when the sponge is dry. Putting a damp sponge on top of the powder can cause it to stick together, which should never (never!) be the end goal.
