Vitamin Sea: Cosmetic Benefits of Salt Water Plus, DIY Sea Salt Scrub

They say that you can fix everything with the help of sea air ... and we cannot but agree with this. There is nothing better than a day at the seaside to ease your worries, clear your mind, and hit the reset button. But, if you've ever noticed a literal glow after a day at the beach, it could be thanks to the vitamin sea. To learn about some of the beauty benefits of salt water, we spoke with Skincare.com consultant and board certified dermatologist Dr. Dhawal Bhanusal. Turns out there was a lot of beauty on the beach that day!

CLEANSING

Like a rinse in the shower or take an Epsom salt bath, swimming in the ocean can clean the surface of the skin from pollution and debris. Talk to any beach dweller and they will also say that the ocean also has the ability to clear the mind! While it's not certain, many worship the sea, and sitting on the beach looking out to the ocean can be a soothing experience.

EXHAUST

“Most of all, salt water serves as a great exfoliator,” says Dr. Bhanusali, and if you’ve ever swum in the ocean and felt your skin afterwards, you probably agree. Salt water gently cleanses the surface of the skin from dead cells and other impurities, making it softer.

MOISTURIZING

Salt water may get a bad rap for drying it out, but in fact, swimming in the ocean can really help hydrate your skin if you remember to moisturize after your swim! According to Dr. Bhanusali, the vitamins and minerals found in salt water can help retain moisture when you moisturize your skin after swimming. After bathing, apply a moisturizing body lotion (like this one from Kiehl's) and an ultra-moisturizing facial moisturizer, such as Aqualia Thermal Mineral Water Moisturizing Gel from Vichy, to your body. Formulated to lock in moisture, this lightweight hydrating gel is infused with the brand's highest concentration of mineral thermal water, which can strengthen skin's natural moisture barrier and protect against environmental aggressors. (And, of course, after swimming, be sure to reapply the broad-spectrum SPF 30 or more you took to the beach!)

  2. Leave for a moment and then rinse in the shower.
