Skin Care 101: What Causes Clogged Pores?

Clogged pores can happen to anyone - even those of us who follow a strict skincare regimen. As the most basic root of acne, clogged pores are blamed for everything from blackheads to uneven complexion. What Causes Clogged Pores? We share the top five culprits below.

dead skin

The top layer of our skin, the epidermis, constantly creates new skin cells and sheds old ones. When these dead skin cells have the opportunity to accumulate—due to dry skin, lack of exfoliation, or other factors—they can clog pores.

Excess oil

The next layer of our skin, the dermis, contains the glands responsible for producing sebum. These oils, called sebum, help keep the skin soft and hydrated. Sometimes these sebaceous glands become overloaded, producing too much sebum and causing dead skin cells stick together and clog pores.

Hormonal changes

When our bodies experiencing hormonal ups and downs, the amount of oil our skin produces can vary. This means that menstruation, pregnancy, and puberty can cause oil levels to spike, causing clogged pores and breakouts.

excessive exfoliation

While it may seem like exfoliating those dead skin cells is the solution to any clogged pore problem, overdoing it can only make the problem worse. When you over-exfoliate, you end up drying out your skin, adding another layer of blockage. Dryness then causes your skin to overcompensate with sebum production, further clogging your pores.

Products for hair and skin

Your favorite beauty products may be to blame for your tanned complexion. Many popular products may contain formulas with pore-clogging ingredients. Look for products that say "non-comedogenic" on the label, which means the formula shouldn't clog pores.
