101 UV Filters: How to Find the Right Sunscreen for You

Now that warmer weather has (finally) arrived, it's time to get serious - or for many of us, even more seriously - about getting sunscreen as we get to spend more time outdoors. It is extremely important to remember that the use of broad spectrum sunscreen, as well as other sun protection habits, should be part of our daily skin care routine if you plan to be outside in the spring and summer sun. If you don't know how to find the right sunscreen for you, you've come to the right place. Below we explain the different types of UV filters you can find in sunscreen!

Types of UV Filters

When it comes to sunscreen, you'll often find two types of UV filters that help protect your skin from the sun's harmful UV rays, meaning when sunscreen is used and reapplied as directed.

Physical filters

Physical filters can sit on top of your skin and help reflect UV rays. You'll most often see ingredients like titanium dioxide or zinc oxide on the label of your sunscreen if it contains physical filters.

Chemical filters

Sunscreens with chemical filters containing ingredients such as avobenzone and benzophenone help absorb UV rays, thereby reducing their penetration into the skin.

You can choose any type of filter in your sunscreen, but be sure to always check the label for broad spectrum, which means the sunscreen will provide effective protection against both UVA and UVB rays. UVA is known to penetrate deep into the skin and can contribute to visible signs of skin aging such as wrinkles and fine lines, while UVB rays are responsible for superficial skin damage such as sunburn. Both UVA and UVB rays can contribute to the development of skin cancer.
