Sun Safety 101: How to Apply Sunscreen Properly

Damage from UV rays can take a toll on the skin, from increasing age spots to speeding up the appearance of wrinkles and fine lines. It means it is important to use sunscreen 365 days a yeareven when the sun doesn't shine. But don't just lather it up and think you won't get sunburn. Here we will tell you how to properly apply sunscreen.

Step 1: Choose wisely.

Company American Academy of Dermatology (AAD) recommends choosing a sunscreen with an SPF of 30 or higher that is water resistant and provides broad spectrum coverage. Don't forget to also look at the expiration date. Food and Drug Administration warns that some sunscreen active ingredients may weaken over time.

Step 2: Get the timing right.

According to the AAD, the best time to apply sunscreen is 15 minutes before going outside. Most formulas take this long to properly absorb into the skin, so if you wait until you're outside, your skin won't be protected.

Step 3: Measure it.

Many bottles instruct the user to use only one ounce per use, mostly the size of a shot glass. This serving of sunscreen should be enough to adequately cover most adults in a thin, even layer.

Step 4: Don't be stingy.

Be sure to cover some areas that are usually overlooked: the tip of the nose, around the eyes, the tops of the feet, the lips, and the skin around the head. Take your time so you don't miss these easily overlooked spots.
