DIY facial care tips from the famous beautician Rene Roulo

It's just that the word "facial" sounds luxurious, and while any of them are cool, and all of them, let's face it: most of the time we apply sheet masks in our underwear or under eye masks ten minutes before our concealer. Obviously, spa treatments are not always provided, which means facial care at home are mandatory. Yes, you read that right – frequent facials are important for your skin. The benefits of a deep cleansing, massage and/or mask can leave your skin radiant, nourished and rejuvenated.

But before doing a homemade facial, there are a few things you need to know. We had the opportunity to chat with a famous beautician and skincare expert. Rene Roulot to find out her top tips for facial care at home.

Make sure you have everything you need

"To get a relaxing facial at home, it's important that you have the right facial tools and products," Rulo explains. “This includes an exfoliant such as a facial scrub, a sonic cleansing brush or an exfoliating peel, a serum for your skin type, a mask for your skin type (and what your skin needs during your facial), and a loofah or face sponge. ".

Give yourself enough time

Even if you're not making an appointment at the spa, you should still set aside enough time to cleanse your face thoroughly. “Give yourself 30 minutes to fully apply each step,” Roulo suggests. “This time should also be enjoyable and relaxing, so take your time. I would also recommend doing a home facial at the end of the day. You can do it in the morning, just remember to put on sunscreen before going out."

Do yourself a mini-facial more often

“In between your regular monthly facials, I highly recommend doing a mini facial once a week at home,” Roulo adds. A mini facial should consist of cleansing, exfoliating, applying a serum for your skin type, masking, and moisturizing. “This will help reveal softer, clearer, smoother and younger looking skin that goes beyond normal skincare.”

The perfect facial at home, according to René Roulot:

STEP 1: Start by washing your face and removing makeup. If you're doing a facial with make-up and grime left over from the day, you're really just rubbing your face, not cleansing it properly.

STEP 2: Massage with gentle facial scrub like mine Mint polishing beads  Apply lightly to the skin for 30 seconds to a minute to remove dead skin cells from the surface. Do not apply too much pressure when massaging, be sure to rinse well and pat your skin dry.

STEP 3: Apply a layer of exfoliating peel like mine Triple Berry Smoothing Peel and leave for three to ten minutes, depending on the sensitivity of your skin.

STEP 4: Apply a thin layer of serum (we love Kiehl's Hydro-Plumping Re-Texturizing Re-Texturizing Serum Concentrate) and apply a face mask.

STEP 5: Complete your facial with toner, moisturizer and eye cream.
