The makeup artist's secret for flawless foundation coverage

During our interview with Sir John, he explained to us that whenever he has time, he starts every makeup application with a mini 15-minute facial, starting with pore tightening clay mask followed by facial massage. Whether you're doing makeup for a special occasion or just another day at the office, follow Sir John's step-by-step guide to ensure flawless coverage.

STEP 1: CLEAR

No makeup application should begin unless you have a blank canvas to begin with. To remove make-up residue, dirt and other impurities from the surface of the skin, use micellar water. We recommend L'Oréal Paris Micellar Water Formula. You can choose from formulas for normal to dry skin, normal to oily skin, and a formula to remove waterproof makeup.

STEP 2: MASK

Follow Sir John's advice and take a clay mask, maybe even three. Masks L'Oreal Paris Pure-Clay ideal for a multi-mask session and allows you to address multiple skin care concerns at the same time. Depending on which mask you choose, you can unclog pores and absorb excess sebum, restore radiance to your skin, or smooth the surface of your skin with exfoliation. Use one or a combination of all three mineral clay masks and then move on to the next step.

STEP 3: FACE MASSAGE

After you've washed off the mask, it's time to moisturize it. But for a truly flawless look, consider using a moisturizer or even facial oil for a simple homemade facial massage. Age Perfect Hydra-Nutrition Facial Oil by L'Oréal Paris Great option for dry, dull skin. This lightweight oil is formulated with a blend of eight essential oils for a truly relaxing spa scent. Put 4-5 drops into the palm of your hand, rub your palms together and gently massage the oil into your skin with your fingertips. Start in the center of the face and move your fingers up to the ears and outer eye area. Proceed to the eyebrows and hairline by continuing this gentle upward circular motion - the downward massage can tighten the skin and, over time, wrinkles and fine lines can appear. Finally, smooth the oil from the neck to the jaw line and finish the upper chest.

When you're ready, move on to primer and foundation. Need an entry? Here are some of our favorite primers with skincare benefits. You should notice that they blend smoothly into your freshly cleansed and hydrated skin.
