Meet the hairdresser washing his face with shampoo

You've probably seen Kristin Ess's hair floating around the Internet - they practically made for Instagram (think soft beach waves, choppy layers and chic hair accessories) - and have been recreated by beauty gurus and enthusiasts alike. Her chic and accessible creations (along with a loyal following) have helped her amass over 500 followers on Instagram, as well as her eponymous hair care line, which you can find in your local Target store. We recently caught up with the celebrity stylist to find out how she takes care of her skin, including an unconventional cleanser that is a staple in her routine.

As someone who wears makeup regularly, Ess describes her skin care routine as "semi-minimal" yet effective. “I use three products: I wash off makeup with Dior Hydra Life micellar water, and then in the shower I use Kristin Ess Extra Gentle Shampoo to cleanse my face.” One day, Ess stumbled upon a hack while taking a shower and never looked back. “I find it cleanses but never dries out my face. I use it with Korean face towels - they are like sheets and exfoliate them every day. That's all!"

Well, that's about it. The third product in the Ess routine is a moisturizer. She chooses Kiehl's Creme D'Elegance Repairateur, which she describes as "a super rich cream that [she] puts on". In addition to regular cleansing and moisturizing, she also does facials regularly to keep her complexion glowing. “I do them every other week,” Ess says, adding that her biweekly facial allows her to do simpler skincare routines at home.

Although Ess takes a stripped-down approach to skin care, she considers herself a maximalist when it comes to her daily makeup. Does she put on a "killer red" lip (her favorite Milk Lipstick in Name Drop) or stroke NYX Powder Puff Lippie, her Holy Grail lipstick, Ess uses makeup to elevate her looks and convey her mood. Same thing, girl, same thing. If you haven't followed Ess on Instagram yet, what are you waiting for? Ask her for genius beauty tips, tricks and of course inspirational hair ideas every day.
