Will a silk face mask help my mask?

Here's the thing: My acne hasn't been this bad since I was in high school. But wearing a mask - while important for protecting myself and others - has made me intimately familiar with cystitis. pimples on my chin and again cheeks. That's why I decided to learn more about silk face masks, which are supposed to be safer on the skin. To get an idea of how silk masks can benefit the skin (and hopefully save my maskne stalemate), I turned to certified beautician Nicole Hatfield from pompous beauty certified dermatologist and Skincare.com expert Dr. Hadley King

How do masks cause acne?

Face masks, which are important to wear when leaving the house to prevent the spread of the coronavirus, can create an environment that is also conducive to acne. “The occlusive nature of the protective mask creates a moist and warm state under the mask, which can lead to increased sebum and sweat production,” says Dr. King. “In turn, this can lead to irritation, inflammation, clogged pores, and breakouts.”

While hot and sticky environments can be to blame for acne growth, Hatfield adds that friction also plays a role. “Maskne is caused mainly by mechanical acne,” she says. “Here, friction, pressure, or rubbing causes acne regardless of the pre-existing acne condition.”

Are silk face masks better for the skin than other types of masks?

Wearing a silk face mask, as opposed to a nylon or cotton face mask, will not necessarily stop the masking completely, but may help. “Wearing a silk face mask has the same benefits as using silk pillowcase“, says Hatfield. “Silk is better than other fabrics because it is more breathable and less abrasive, which means it causes less friction and pressure on the skin.” Dr. King agrees and adds, "The nature of silk will also be less irritating, as it will accumulate less heat and moisture."

However, the best way to prevent masking is to make sure your protective mask (silk or not) stays clean. “Be sure to wash your face mask after each use with a mild soap or laundry detergent free of pore-clogging ingredients like sulfates,” Hatfield says. "You may want to avoid scented fabric softeners and dryer wipes and stick to mild, unscented options."

Dr. King also suggests ditching make-up under the mask and using non-comedogenic skin care products.
