Why is menthol used in cosmetic products?

Have you ever experienced a cooling sensation when applying shaving gel on skin or shampoo your scalp? Most likely products contain menthol, ingredient derived from peppermint found in some cosmetics. To learn more about the mint ingredient and what benefits it can offer, we consulted with Dr. Charis Dolzki, Certified Dermatologist and Skincare.com Consultant.

What are the benefits of menthol?

According to Dr. Doltsky, menthol, also known as peppermint, is a chemical derivative of the peppermint plant. “When applied topically, menthol provides a cooling sensation,” she explains. "That's why using menthol products can be so pleasurable - you immediately feel cold, sometimes tingly."

The ingredient is commonly used in after-sun care products because it can relieve the pain of burns. It is also often used in shaving creams and detoxifying shampoos. “Menthol is also responsible for the cool, fresh feeling in toothpastes, mouthwashes, hair products, after-shower gels and, of course, shaving products,” says Dr. Doltsky. One of our favorite menthol products is L'Oréal Paris EverPure Scalp Care and Detox Shampoo, which has a fresh minty scent that cools the scalp and removes sebum and impurities.

Who should avoid menthol?

While menthol is known to provide a cooling sensation, it is not for everyone. Dr. Doltsky suggests testing menthol products on a small area of skin before using the product on a large area. “Allergic sensitivity to menthol is rare, but it does exist,” she says. "Products containing menthol, along with essential oils such as peppermint, eucalyptus, and camphor, may cause a higher likelihood of contact allergies." If you have a persistent allergic reaction, stop using the product and consult your board-certified dermatologist.
