We love clay masks, but how often should we use them? Dermatologist weighs

Cover-ups are one of our favorite skin care routines in the past (and TLC's favorite tiny acts). We declared our love for sheet masksmasks that work like cleansers and now at the top - clay masks. Unlike other masks, clay masks are a bit more advanced in the skin care world because how well you use them depends a lot on your skin type. We knocked Skincare.com advice dermatologist Michelle Farber, MD, Schweiger Dermatology Group to break down what you need to keep in mind before your next clay masking session.

What do clay masks do?

According to Dr. Farber, clay masks are great for getting rid of impurities and excess dirt on the surface of the skin. “By soaking up excess sebum, these masks can temporarily tighten pores,” she says. What's more, clay masks can also help improve the absorption of other products you apply to your skin afterwards. What skin types benefit the most from clay masks, the oilier the better, she says. "Clay masks are best for acne-prone and oily skin, while drier or more sensitive skin may dehydrate more easily from these masks."

How to Incorporate a Clay Mask into Your Daily Routine

Clay masks should be used more sparingly if you have normal or dry skin, and more frequently if you have oily skin or acne. “Oily skin can handle twice a week, while sensitive skin is better off with a weekly mask,” Dr. Farber advises. After the clay mask, be sure to moisturize it, but don't use too many other products if you have sensitive skin to prevent irritation. Need a new clay mask?
