What is acne in adults?

Before we delve into all the ins and outs of the Effaclar system, we would like to clear up a few acne myths. (You know, to make sure you don't fall for any word of mouth fabrication.) Dozens of people mistakenly believe that acne is just a teenage problem. The truth is that acne can strike adults in their 30s, 40s, and even 50s. In fact, some adults develop acne for the first time in adulthood, rather than during adolescence. But unlike the acne commonly encountered in high school (typically whiteheads and blackheads caused by excess sebum and clogged pores), adult acne can be cyclical and more difficult to manage. It most commonly appears in women around the mouth, chin, jawline, and cheeks.

What can cause acne in adults?

As already mentioned, teenage acne is more often caused by excess sebum production and clogged pores. On the other hand, adult acne is likely caused by one or more of the following:

1. Fluctuating Hormones: Imbalances in hormone levels can cause your sebaceous glands to become active, which in turn leads to breakouts. Most women experience fluctuating hormone levels during their periods, during pregnancy, menopause, or when they stop or start taking birth control pills.

2. Stress: It's no secret that stress can make your skin condition worse. If your skin is already breakout-prone, a stressful situation — whether it's preparing for an important exam or going through a breakup — can trigger skin inflammation. In addition, our body produces more androgens in response to stress. These hormones stimulate our sebaceous glands, which can lead to acne, according to AAD.

3. Genetics: Is your mom, dad, or sibling struggling with acne? Research suggests that some may have a genetic predisposition to acne and are therefore more prone to acne as adults.

4. Bacteria: Your hands are often covered in oil and bacteria on a daily basis due to touching doorknobs, typing on a keyboard, shaking hands, etc. causing bacteria can easily transfer to your skin and cause a breakout.

5. Using the wrong types of products: Acne-prone skin requires special care than its counterparts. When shopping for skincare or cosmetics for your acne-prone skin, look for formulas that are non-comedogenic, non-comedogenic, and/or oil-free. This will reduce the chance of clogged pores, which can lead to breakouts.

Acne Ingredients

Effaclar System's trio of skincare products - cleanser, toner and spot treatment - harness the power of acne-fighting ingredients like salicylic acid. Here's a scoop on these powerful and effective ingredients.

Salicylic acid: Salicylic acid is one of the most common ingredients used to reduce acne. That's why you can find it in a range of acne scrubs, gels, and cleansers. Since salicylic acid can cause dryness and irritation of the skin, it is important not to overuse this ingredient. What's more, since salicylic acid can make your skin more sensitive to sunlight, it's even more important to apply (and reapply) a broad-spectrum SPF every day when using a product containing it.

Benzoyl peroxide: Benzoyl peroxide is also a well-known ingredient to help eliminate the severity of acne pimples. Like salicylic acid, benzoyl peroxide can cause dryness, flaking, and irritation. Use it for its intended purpose. Again, you need to remember to apply and reapply broad spectrum sunscreen each day you use a product containing benzoyl peroxide.

Additional Ingredients Found in the Effaclar System

Glycolic acid: Glycolic acid is one of the most common fruit acids derived from sugar cane. The ingredient helps smooth the appearance of the skin's surface and can be found in a variety of products, including creams, serums, and cleansers.

Lipo-hydroxy acid: Lipohydroxy acid (LHA) is widely used in creams, cleansers, toners, and spot treatments for its mild exfoliating properties.

La Roche-Posay Effaclar System

Without further ado, get to know the La Roche-Posay Effaclar system. The package includes Effaclar Medicated Cleansing Gel (100 ml), Effaclar Cleansing Solution (100 ml) and Effaclar Duo (20 ml) for use in a 3-step treatment. Below we will walk you through the steps.

Step 1: Clear

Formulated with Salicylic Acid and LHA, Effaclar Medicated Cleansing Gel thoroughly cleanses the skin to remove pore-clogging dirt, impurities and excess sebum.

Use:  Wet your face twice daily and apply a quarter-size amount of medicated cleansing gel to your fingers. Using your fingertips, apply the cleanser to your face in a circular motion. Wash off with warm water and dry.

Step 2: Tone

Formulated with Salicylic and Glycolic Acids, Effaclar Brightening Solution gently tones, clears clogged pores and refines skin texture. The product also helps reduce the appearance of minor imperfections.

Use: After cleansing, apply the cleansing solution all over your face with a soft cotton swab or pad. Do not rinse.

Step 3: Treatment

Formulated with benzoyl peroxide and LHA, Effaclar Duo helps remove dull surface cellular debris and sebum, clearing moderate blemishes over time, and gradually evens out skin texture.

Use: Apply a thin layer (half a pea size) to affected areas 1-2 times daily. If skin irritation or excessive flaking occurs, reduce the use of this product. As mentioned above, when using products containing salicylic acid and benzoyl peroxide, you should remember to apply and reapply a broad spectrum SPF every day as these ingredients can make your skin more sensitive to the sun.
