How to keep makeup from melting this summer

Just because temperatures are rising doesn't mean your makeup needs to look messy this summer. There are a few simple steps you can take to give your full makeup a little extra hold, no matter what the weather might be. From prepping your skin with a primer to finishing off your look with a setting spray, we're giving you step-by-step instructions on how to make sure your makeup doesn't melt this summer!

STEP 1: MOISTURIZING

First things first: moisturize! Never skip your moisturizer. Moisturizer helps keep skin comfortable and hydrated, and provides the perfect surface to apply the makeup of your choice. However, not all moisturizers are the same. We recommend avoiding heavy makeup formulas and opting for a lightweight hydrating gel or serum instead. Need help? You are lucky! We share our best moisturizers to wear under makeup here!

STEP 2: PREPARE YOUR LOOK

Using a primer is an important step in creating long-lasting makeup. With summer in full swing, it's a good idea to get a primer that will help control excess sebum (makeup's #1 enemy) as well as increase the wear of your favorite makeup products. One of our popular formulas? Urban Decay De-Slick Face Primer to help control unwanted shine and prolong makeup wear. Whether you're dealing with summer humidity or the harsh heat of studio lighting, rest assured that De-Slick Complexion Primer will help keep your makeup looking flawless for hours. You can even use it over makeup for a quick refresh of your complexion!

STEP 3: GET THE RIGHT BASIS

Just like our skincare routine, our makeup routine needs some adjustments as summer approaches. Once you've moisturized and prepped your skin, it's time to even out your skin tone (and cover up any blemishes and discoloration marks) with foundation. Get to a stable base like this Lancome Teint Idole Ultra Wear Foundation Stick. The formula is oil-free, highly pigmented and gives the skin a natural matte finish. Plus, the convenient stick packaging makes it the perfect product to slip into your bag for a quick touch-up anytime, anywhere!

STEP 4: USE WATERPROOF MAKEUP

It's undeniable that heat and sweat can cause makeup to wear off. And it's not just about the complexion, but also about the eyelids! During the summer months, we prefer to swap out our regular eye makeup products for waterproof ones to prevent smearing of eyeshadow, eyeliner and/or mascara. Better? Start your eye makeup routine with a waterproof eyeliner, such as NYX Professional Makeup Prove it! Waterproof Eyeshadow Primer. After applying your favorite eyeshadow, apply a waterproof eyeliner such as Maybelline EyeStudio Lasting Drama Waterproof Gel Pencil. Available in 10 shades, this liner is perfect for any look! Finally, help lengthen and define lashes with a waterproof mascara like Waterproof Mascara NYX Professional Makeup Doll Eye Mascara.

STEP 5: SET YOUR VIEW ON THE PLACE

After spending all this time perfecting your complexion to a T, you'll want to make sure it lasts. This is where a setting spray and/or powder comes in handy. Finishing off with any of these products can give your makeup some serious staying power. One of our favorite fixing sprays is the Urban Decay All Nighter Long Lasting Makeup Fixing Spray, which lets makeup look like it's been on all day, keeping everything from eyeshadow to bronzer lasting. up to 16 hours. To use, hold bottle 8-10 inches from face and spray up to four times in an "X" and "T" pattern.

STEP 6: REMOVE OIL

Few things can be worse than looking in the mirror at noon and realizing that your face is shining like a disco ball. Sometimes, no matter how carefully you prepare your skin for a hot climate, oiliness and excess sebum simply cannot be avoided. For this reason, we love to keep a pack of blotting pads on hand to soak up unwanted oil and instantly give our skin a matte and even look.

Not a fan of blotting papers? Finishing powders and loose translucent powders are also helpful in absorbing excess sebum. NYX Professional Makeup Mattifying Powder can help your skin fight oily shine by absorbing oil without settling into fine lines.
