How to deal with dry winter skin

One of the most common dry skin problem in winter. Between the bitter cold, the lack of humidity and artificial space heating, dryness, peeling and stupidity seems inevitable regardless of your skin type. It's not all in your head either. “Forced hot air heating often dries out the skin very quickly,” says a certified dermatologist and Skincare.com consultant. Dr. Michael Kaminer. "Especially in colder climates, we see this as soon as temperatures drop."

Dry skin can be all over the body. Cracks in arms, legs and elbows, and chapped lips are all common areas where a rough, dry texture is felt, especially in winter. “Other problems can include itchy skin, rashes, and just skin aging,” adds Kaminer. So, if you're wondering what you can do to help your skin return to its smooth, hydrated, and happy state, keep reading because we're sharing tips on how to fix all the dry winter skin problems.

TIP 1: Moisturize

According to Dr. Kaminer, moisturizer is one of the most important products you can have in your winter skin care arsenal. “The main thing is to hydrate more than in warmer climates,” he says. In addition to moisturizing more frequently, you can also replace your current formula with one richer in moisturizing ingredients. We love CeraVe Moisturizer because it's rich but not greasy and contains hyaluronic acid and ceramides to provide long-lasting hydration and skin barrier protection.

A pro tip to get the most out of your moisturizer is to apply it on damp skin. “Apply moisturizer immediately after getting out of the shower or bath,” recommends Kaminer. “This is when your skin is at its most hydrated, and moisturizers can help seal it in.”

TIP 2: Don't take hot showers

When taking a shower, it is important to remember the temperature of the water. While hot water can be relaxing on a cold day, it comes with its own set of consequences, including very dry skin. Instead, opt for a shorter warm shower. This will help ensure that your skin's outer moisture barrier is not damaged or irritated by hot water.

TIP 3: Protect your lips

The delicate skin of the lips is more prone to drying out than the rest of the skin on our body. That's why it's important to keep a moisturizing lip balm on hand at all times to prevent chapped lips. Try Everyday Humans Bomb Diggity Wonder Salve for this.

TIP 4: Invest in a humidifier

Artificial heat can suck moisture out of your skin. If you're at home, run a humidifier while your heating is on to replace some of the moisture in the air. We recommend the Canopy humidifier, which features innovative no-mist technology and is recommended for combating dry skin. You can also keep a facial spray on hand, such as Lancôme Rose Milk Face Spray, to hydrate yourself throughout the day. Formulated with hyaluronic acid and rose water to instantly hydrate, soothe and nourish skin.
