Dermatologists: What is CoQ10?

If you are so obsessed with readingskin care ingredient lists like us, you have no doubt been exposed to CoQ10. He appears inserums, moisturizers and much more, and always makes us think because of its unique alphanumeric combination. We consulted with a certified dermatologistRachel Nazarian, MD, Schweiger Dermatology Group to find out what CoQ10 really is and why it plays a key role in skin care. While the name sounds odd, it's easy to pronounce "co-q-ten" and even easier to incorporate into your daily skincare routine. Here's how.

What is CoQ10?

According to Dr. Nazarian, CoQ10 is a natural antioxidant. "This helps prevent damage to the skin's surface from internal and external sources such as sunlight, pollution and ozone," she says. Dr. Nazarian explains that the reason CoQ10 is a common ingredient in skin care products is because it helps maintain the skin's ability to maintain collagen and elastin, which are vital for healthy skin.

Who Should Use CoQ10?

“Coenzyme Q10 can benefit almost every skin type,” says Dr. Nazarian. "It's great for people who want to get rid of sun spots, wrinkles, or those who live in a larger, more polluted city." However, if you have an autoimmune skin disease, including vitiligo, you should check with your dermatologist before incorporating CoQ10 into your daily routine.

What is the best way to include CoQ10 in your skin care?

You can include CoQ10 in your daily skin care routine using lotion or something likeIndie Lee CoQ-10 Toner. "You don't want to mix it with ingredients that contain exfoliants like glycolic acid because it can break down and worsen CoQ10," adds Dr. Nazarian.

“Skin damage happens daily, slowly, and over many years, so CoQ10 is designed to be used daily over a long period of time,” continues Dr. Nazarian. "The longer you use it, the more you'll start to see its benefits."
