Derm DMs: Do Men Need Eye Cream?

Fact: We contacted the dermatologists directly via Instagram direct message, because why not? Sometimes we just need to find a quick answer that is too easy to call a dermatologist, but also too complicated to quickly get to the good old Google search bar. Lately we've been thinking about whether men need Eye cream — or a formula specifically designed for men. We reached out to DM Skincare.com in consultation with NYC Dermatologist Joshua Zeichner, MD, for his expert opinion.

Short answer: yes, men absolutely need to consume Eye cream, but it doesn't necessarily matter if it's specifically designed for men or women. "It's a myth that men's skin is less sensitive or prone to aging compared to women's skin," says Dr. Zeichner. “Men can certainly use the same types eye creams that women use. The ingredients used in men's skin care products are very similar to those for women, he adds. "The main difference is that fragrance is used to cater to the preferences of men over women." In addition to the packaging and fragrance of products, most likely eye creams contain similar ingredients.

As for the ingredients women and men should look for in an eye cream, Zeicher recommends those that contain antioxidants, retinol and caffeine. “Antioxidants help protect the surface of the skin from free radical damage. Retinol stimulates new collagen and elastin production to strengthen the skin's foundation, while caffeine constricts blood vessels to help reduce puffiness."
