Derm DM: Here's what you need to know about hydrocolloid dressing

Not all acne is the same, which means that they should be treated differently. While most productsthat treat acne targeting the first stages of acne (read: before the white head even breaks the surface), there is an ingredient designed to fight a pimple towards the end of its cycle, after it has been potentially selected and exposed to external sources. Enter: hydrocolloid bandage. In skin care, this special wound-healing ingredient is most often found in acne patches. To find out more, we consulted a board certified dermatologist,Karen Weintraub, MD, Schweiger Dermatology Group in New York.

What is a hydrocolloid dressing?

According to Dr. Weintraub, "Hydrocolloid dressings are moisture-retaining dressings that promote healing of moist wounds." This ingredient is actually meant for acute or chronic wounds that need gentle drainage and protection. When applied, the hydrocolloid forms a gel that promotes healthy wound resorption. The best part? These headbands are also waterproof, so they can be used anytime, including while showering or in the water.

But is hydrocolloid an acne remedy?

Generally, acne patches are meant to protect the pimple while it's healing (especially if you've picked it or if it's been in contact with makeup brushes or foreign objects). The hydrocolloid may be helpful in treating acne because "it can absorb the secretions from the acne and help increase the absorption of any acne medications that are also in the patch," says Dr. Weintraub. Basically, it acts as a protective shield that helps ensure that your pimple doesn't come into contact with dirt, bacteria, or dirt, including anything on your fingers! This may cause further infection or irritation.

Include hydrocolloid in your acne treatment

While everyone can benefit from a hydrocolloid, "patients who have a tendency to pick pimples should consider a hydrocolloid bandage because it will help protect the blemish," says Dr. Weintraub.
