Derm DM: what does "dermatologist tested" really mean?

I have seen and used countless skincare products that have the words "dermatologist tested" or "dermatologist recommended" on them. written on the label. And while it's not something I'm actively looking for when buying new skin care products, it's a definite selling point and something that makes me feel good about introducing a new product to my skin care. But recently I realized that I really have no idea what the term "dermatologist tested" actually means. To answer my questions, I consulted with board certified dermatologist, Dr. Camilla Howard-Verovich.

What does dermatologically tested mean?

When a product is tested by dermatologists, it often means that a dermatologist was involved in the development process. “The experience of a dermatologist is used to determine safe and effective products through case reports, clinical trials, and case-control studies,” says Dr. Verovich. Because dermatologists are physicians trained in the diagnosis and treatment of diseases of the hair, skin, nails, and mucous membranes, they may play different roles in verifying the safety and efficacy of a product. “Some dermatologists may serve as researchers in clinical trials, while others may work as consultants in the development of skin or hair care products,” explains Dr. Verovich. They also shed light on which ingredients can cause allergic reactions.

What standards must a product meet in order to pass dermatological control?

According to Dr. Verovich, it depends on the product. For example, if a product is claimed to be hypoallergenic, the dermatologist is usually well aware of the specific ingredients that are potential allergens. This is especially important for people with very sensitive skin. “Often I recommend that patients look for skin care products labeled as “dermatologist recommended” or “dermatologist formulated” like CeraVe,” says Dr. Verovich. One of our favorite products from the brand is the Hydrating Cream-to-Foam Cleanser, which transforms from cream to soft foam to effectively remove dirt and makeup without stripping skin of its natural hydration or leaving it feeling tight or dry.
