Yes you can get a spray tan when it rains

Imagine it's morning tanning spray It's been weeks (or months if your salon has been closed due to COVID-19) on your calendar and you look outside to find it's pouring rain. Ugh! We were there too. In such a seemingly bleak situation, you can either stay committed to your appointment, unearth your trusty umbrella, or try DIY tanning at home or reschedule, which may or may not work depending on your plans for the future. We turned to a tanning expert from Saint-Tropez Sophie Evans to help those of us who are trying to make this decision. Below, she details how perfect this taneven in heavy rain.

Do you think it's worth giving up self-tanning if it's raining?

Sunbathing in the rain is quite real! Just make sure you have an umbrella and wear clothes that properly cover your skin. If you can, drive or book a taxi to and from your destination. You will have to get very wet for your tan to be spoiled by the rain.

What to wear for a spray tan?

We always recommend wearing loose clothing after self-tanning. Now, however, with the new self-tanning technology, we don't have to be so careful. I sunbathe celebrities right before important events in their chosen outfit. I apply setting powder and setting spray after self-tanning, similar to how makeup artists use setting sprays and translucent powders.

What can happen if your self-tanner gets wet?

If you're using a traditional self tanner, you can't get it wet for four to eight hours. If you do, you may cause spots or streaks. Even with newer, faster-acting self-tanners, you should avoid getting wet for the first hour. If you get wet right after self tanning, take a clean, dry, soft towel and blot where the tan is, then reapply over the self tanner and let the tan develop.

Okay, so how do we give us step-by-step instructions on how to reapply self-tanner.

With Saint Tropez, always remember that all you have to do is cover your skin. The tan does not need to be applied evenly because St. Tropez will only take on one color, no matter how much you apply! Our tanner absorbs into the skin and comes in only one color, making it easy to remove rain and water marks. Just dry your skin and reapply self-tanner. If it doesn't even look at first, wait until it shows up after four to eight hours and you'll wash off the built-in bronzer. Never evaluate your self-tanner until after your first shower and the recommended soak time.

What self-tanning products at home do you recommend if getting wet is inevitable?

St. Tropez Self Tan Express Mousse Bronzer allows you to shower within an hour after application, or up to three hours if you want your fake tan to be darker. These express solutions do not allow anything to damage the tan after the first hour of color development. They contain rapid penetration enhancers that deliver self-tanning to the skin faster, leaving behind an extra protective layer that prevents sweat, water, etc. from damaging the development of self-tanning. To maintain a tan, we also recommend using a lightweight formula such as L'Oréal Paris Sublime tanning mousse this will help keep your glow.
