Blackheads 101: Get rid of clogged pores

When your pores are clogged with impurities—think dirt, oil, bacteria, and dead skin cells—and exposed to air, oxidation gives clogged pores an unpleasant—and often noticeable—brownish-black tint. Enter: black dots. While it may seem like a quick fix to shrink your skin down to get rid of blackheads, you can keep these hands for yourself. RESIST CONSUMPTION TRY OR CHOOSE

While this seems like a quick fix, picking at the skin or forcing blackheads out can help. irritate the area and, worse, lead to scars. Using your fingers to remove blackheads can also lead to dirt and bacteria getting into your pores.

CLEANSING AND EXFOLIATION

OTHER OPTIONS

The dermatologist may use special instruments to gently remove blackheads that have not gone away with topical medications. Again, don't try to use blackhead removers yourself. Remember: resist the urge to clap and pick.

PREVENTION

Take steps to prevent acne before it occurs. Whenever possible, choose non-comedogenic products and breathable cosmetics that do not clog pores. Be sure to wash, cleanse, and exfoliate your skin regularly to keep it free of dirt and buildup that can lead to breakouts.
