5 Dermatologist-Approved Anti-Aging Ingredients

From reducing fine lines and wrinkles to brightening dark spots to restoring radiance to a dull complexion, there is a product for just about everything. But when it comes to these signs of skin aging, we think it's important to forget the tricks, ignore the promises, and go straight to the source - and by source, we mean the best dermatologist. To find out which ingredients are must-have anti-aging products, we reached out to board certified dermatologist and Skincare.com expert Dr. Dhawal Bhanusali.

Anti-Aging Must-Have #1: Broad Spectrum SPF

“It all starts with SPF. It is the most powerful anti-aging ingredient. and, in addition to the obvious benefits in preventing cancer, it significantly reduces the appearance of wrinkles and age spots. Ideally, you should start at SPF 30 or higher with your daily moisturizer and SPF 50 if you're heading to the beach this summer."

Anti-Aging Must-Have #2: Retinol

Retinol, a form of vitamin A, is the holy grail of dermatological ingredients.. It acts as a powerful anti-aging ingredient. This can help increase cell turnover and remove dirt from the surface of your skin - almost like a superficial chemical peel! It helps improve the appearance of wrinkles and even minimize the appearance of scars. Bottom line… everyone should use it.”

Anti-Aging Must-Have #3: Antioxidants

“Free radicals are produced by the environment and can cause significant damage to your skin if not neutralized,” says Bhanusali. His favorite way to make amends for this damage? Antioxidants. "My favorite foods are vitamin C, vitamin E and green tea."

Anti-Aging Must-Have #4: Alpha Hydroxy Acids

Alpha hydroxy acids (AHAs) such as Glycolic acids are excellent exfoliators.. They remove debris and pollutants from the surface of the skin and keep your skin healthy and glowing. I generally recommend using AHAs two to three times a week as part of your anti-aging plan. I have patients who alternate these with moisturizing cleansers to help prepare the skin to better absorb local ingredients."

Anti-Aging Must-Have #5: Argan Oil

“One of my new favorite things I recommend is argan oil as a face serum or mask once or twice a week before bed – let it soak in while you sleep. The oil is an incredible moisturizer and keeps the skin soft and supple.”
