3 ways a humidifier can help your skin in summer

Humidifiers are often associated with winter, when low-moisture air can cause dry skin feel, well, even drier. But what if we told you that humidifiers can beneficial effect on the skin even in summer? According to Skincare.com Consulting Dermatologist Dr. Dhawal Bhanusali, humidifiers can be a huge help in keeping our faces hydrated All year round. Here are three reasons why you shouldn't wait until winter to invest in a humidifier.

Reason for using a moisturizer: Hot, dry climates can dehydrate the skin

In some parts of the world, the air is low in moisture all year round. If you live in a dry, arid climate, you may experience dryness, itching, peeling, cracking or peeling skin, and a moisturizer can help. “Humectants add moisture back to the environment [and can help] your skin retain moisture much better than it would otherwise,” says Dr. Bhanusali.

Remember also that when your skin is dehydrated, your sebum production can increase, so a moisturizer isn't just good for dry skin.

Reason for using a humidifier: Air conditioning also dehydrates the skin.

While air conditioners may be a necessity in the summer, they can also cause moisture levels in the air to drop — just like artificial heating — and subsequently break down the moisture barrier and leave skin dry. This is why some skin care fanatics have been known to keep a small humidifier in their bedroom, and some even keep portable humidifiers on their desks. The fact that many of us will be spending more time indoors this summer to socially distance ourselves is even more of a reason to ditch that humidifier.

Reason for using a humidifier: Your lips can get chapped in the summer

Like the rest of the skin, lips can be more prone to dehydration in dry climates and after prolonged sun exposure. While the rigorous application of lip balm can help with the problem, moisturizers can address the problem directly and leave lips soft, smooth, and hydrated.
