Framing paintings, graphics, photographs and mirrors from A to Z [GUIDE]

Based on our many years of experience, I will present you with a useful guide containing important tips on how to get started with the design of paintings, graphics, photos and posters. What to look for, what frame to choose? Should I use normal, anti-reflective or museum glass, what color should I choose?

What is the most popular frame size?

We select a frame individually for each picture. Each work, regardless of whether it is an oil painting on canvas or paper (watercolor, graphics), or a photograph, deserves a proper, thoughtful design.

The frame must be made for the specific job to be the correct size and color.

Wooden, aluminum or veneered brush?

We most often arrange oil paintings on a stretcher in wide wooden frames. For graphics and watercolors, we also use wooden, but narrower frames, as these works still require a passe-partout.

Old sentimental photographs look good on veneered brushes. Aluminum frames made of high quality lightweight aluminum slats are most often chosen for poster binding and large format printing.

The cost of installation is closely related to the cost of the materials used. The binding of an oil painting on a stretcher is the cost of the frame only. However, works on paper: graphics, photographs, maps, watercolors require not only a frame, but also glass, mats, backs, these are additional elements that affect the costs associated with the design.

Oil painting frame - which frame to choose?

The most suitable are wider frames with a deeper rebate. If there are “cold tones” in the composition of the picture, silver, matte, non-shiny colors are best suited. All shades of gold are always suitable for the “warm colors” of the picture.

For modern paintings, we choose flat geometric frame profiles. For traditional paintings, I would suggest traditional frames with depth, and the best colors are different shades of gold. The cost of a frame for an oil painting depends on the width of the frame profile, manufacturer and manufacturing technology. Prices range from PLN 65,00 to PLN 280,00 per meter.

The frames are made of wood and can be veneered, painted or decorated and gilded with metal. By special order, oval frames or frames with a certain ornament can be made by hand.

Anchor graphics - should they only be in a frame?

Graphics are printed on paper and are therefore sensitive to fluctuations in temperature, humidity and UV rays. For this reason, passe-partout, glass, back are required. Both the frame and the corresponding color of the passe-partout should be in harmony with the graphics, creating a single whole.

Paintings - what frame will they look best in?

Black frames for black and white photos are a versatile solution, they give an elegant, formal look. For old sentimental sepia photos, we offer wooden veneered brush frames.

The most interesting patterns are obtained from Italian and American slats.

Poster - what frame to choose?

We offer aluminum frames for framing posters. The narrow profile of the frame is only a closure, and the right color can emphasize and highlight the most important elements of the framed poster.

How to choose frames for spatial reference?

For spatial referencing, we use special frames so that the object in the frame (t-shirt, medal) shows the three-dimensionality of the object. Such a frame usually has a depth of 3 cm between the glass and the back of the frame.

Framed items must be inconspicuously attached to the back.
