How to draw a Staffordshire Terrier with a pencil

For this work, I used a photo of a Staffordshire Terrier found on the net. Before starting, I desaturate it in Photoshop.

I use pencils with a hardness of 2T, TM, 2M, 5M.

First of all, I make a sketch with a 2T pencil. I try to designate all the boundaries of the transition of tones. After that, I lightly clean up the sketch with an eraser so that the lines are not too bright.

Hatching I start with the eyes. This is convenient in that, firstly, the work comes to life, and secondly, there are the darkest areas here, from which you can build on in further work.

With a 2T pencil I mark the direction of the hair around the eye and on the forehead.

I begin to hatch the wool, starting from the darkest place - the speck of the eyebrow. I make the strokes short to show the short coat of the dog.

Similarly, I work out the wool around the second eye.

I stroke my ear. It is of a darker tone, which allows you to more accurately work on the forehead. I make the strokes short. So that there is no sharp border between the dog and the background, I add small protruding hairs. When working on wrinkles, the main thing is to make them voluminous. In addition to the dark border, it is also necessary to designate shadow and light.

I'm starting to work on the second ear. I start with the darkest areas. I do not forget the strands of wool peeking out from behind the border of the cropped ear.

I work on the inner surface of the ear. First, with a 2T pencil, I evenly shade the entire area, trying to ensure that individual strokes do not stand out (but you can’t rub the pencil!). Then I take the TM and start to darken and draw the details. I also try not to make the strokes too noticeable. I darken 2M and 5M temple and forehead.

I'm working on my nose. First, I barely noticeably mark the darkest areas, then with softer pencils in circular motions and dots I make the shadows deeper. When darkening, I focus on the nostrils, which I initially shaded with 5M. With very short strokes, following the direction of the hair, I draw hairs on the back of the nose.

I'm working on the face. First, I evenly apply strokes of medium tone. Then I start deepening the shadows from the blackest area.

Working with the tongue is like working with the ear. I evenly stroke, hiding individual strokes, then I apply shadows. Glare I clean with a sharp tip of an eraser.

Similarly, I work out the mouth. The dog's mouth has a lot of detail, especially in this breed. I work from the darkest areas.

I draw wrinkles on the neck. It is very important to show their volume. To do this, you need to follow the direction of the wool (the wool is located in an arc, but in different areas it bends differently) and the movement from shadow to light.

I trim my neck. The work is ready.
