Types of piercing jewelry

Before you go for a piercing, it's good to have an idea of what kind of jewelry you want. The options for piercing jewelry are almost limitless. But we have compiled a list of the main categories of jewelry and their corresponding piercings.

  • Rings
  • Barbells
  • Studs
  • Forks and tunnels

Rings

Rings are a classic piercing jewelry. They are such a long-standing part of piercing culture that most people refer to any ear piece as an earring. Although rings have been around for about as long as ear piercings themselves, they continue to change. There are all kinds of rings.

A versatile jewelry style, rings are often used for ear, nose, lip, eyebrow, and nipple piercings.

Captive Beaded Rings

Fixed bead rings (CBR) are easy to identify. The ring itself has a gap between both ends, and the bead fills this gap to complete the circle. For this reason, its other name is ball locking ring. The bead or ball appears to be floating in place.

Seamless rings

A seamless ring is a ring created in such a way as to give the impression of a full circle. Instead of being beaded like the CBR, the ends are joined together. They are put on and taken off by twisting the ends away from each other to create a hole.

Segment rings

Segment rings are basically a cross between CBR and seamless. They have a seamless look but work like a captive beaded ring. Instead of a bead, a segment of the ring is pulled out to insert or remove the jewelry.

Clicker rings

Clicker rings, named for the distinct "click" they make when opened and closed, are another popular alternative to CBR. They are closed with a hinged piece permanently attached to one end of the ring. The benefits of clicker rings include ease of installation/removal and no loss of extra parts.

Circular bars

Circular bars, sometimes called horseshoe bars, are a ring that does not quite form a complete circle. A bead or piece of jewelry is permanently attached to one end of the ring. A bead or decoration is screwed into other signs to cover the bar. This item is more reliable than a beaded ring.

Barbells

Barbells are a popular category of piercing jewelry, not only among weightlifters. They consist of a rod and a bead or ornament at each end. Typically, one bead is permanently held in place and the other is removable to allow insertion/removal of jewelry. They can be decorative or simple decorations.

Barbells are commonly used to pierce the ears, tongue, nose, lips, nipples, navel, and eyebrows. For tongue piercings, they are considered the only safe type of jewelry.

straight rod

Straight bars are simple in design. The bar is straight, commonly used in industrial piercings, as well as tongue and nipple piercings.

Curved or bent rod

Curved or bent rods have a slightly larger shape. They come in different curvatures, from a semicircle to a 90° angle. There are also more dynamic options, such as twisted and spiral rods. Eyebrow piercings often use curved barbells, the same but smaller.

Navel/umbilical rings

Also called belly button bars, belly button rings are curved bars that have a larger, and often more decorative, ball end at the bottom than the top. Instead, at the reverse ring of the navel, the larger end is at the top.

A popular option for belly button rings are belly button rings with pendants. They have an added decoration that hangs or dangles from the bottom of the piece. Danglers are also common in ear and nipple piercings.

Studs

Rivets are a simple decoration that goes well with other decorations or on its own. They consist of a ball, a rod and a substrate. The stem is usually permanently attached to the rim, but is sometimes attached to the base instead. The rod is hidden inside the piercing, which makes it seem that the ball is floating on the skin.

Instead of a ball, you can use another decoration, such as a rhombus or a shape. Studs are usually used as the initial embellishment in a new tattoo. The short shaft moves less, reducing the chance of irritation with a fresh piercing. In addition, hairpins cannot easily get caught in clothing or hair. After the piercing is completely healed, the stud can be left or replaced with another piece of jewelry.

Studs are commonly used for nose and ear piercing jewelry. Other facial piercings on the lower lip use lip studs.

Labret studs

Labret studs are designed for upper lip piercing. This includes lip piercings such as snake and spider bites. Labret studs have a bar permanently attached to a flat backing that adheres to the skin. The ball is screwed into the rod.

The upper lip is the area under the lip and above the chin. While studs are designed for this area, they also allow other piercings such as ear cartilage and nostril piercings.

Plugs and tunnels: jewelry for piercings and stretch marks

Plugs and flesh tunnels are larger pieces of jewelry that stretch the piercing. Stretching is done gradually to fit larger and larger pieces of jewelry safely. Plugs are a solid round piece that is inserted inside the piercing. The flesh tunnel is similar, except that the middle is hollow so you can see right through the other side of the piercing.

Most often, plugs and tunnels are used in earlobe piercings. Nipple and genital piercings are also fairly easy to stretch, but light jewelry is usually recommended for them.

The ear cartilage is a little more risky to stretch and requires a slow approach. Tongue stretching is becoming more and more popular, but can be uncomfortable, most simply opt for larger piercings to begin with.

Purchasing piercings and jewelry in one place

As long as you shop from a trusted source, buying jewelry online is a great way to find cool and unique jewelry. But for a new piercing, it's best to buy jewelry from the same place where the piercing was done.

Piercers are often hesitant to use external jewelry for new piercings. This is not because they want to make a sale, but because they cannot be sure of the safety of other jewelry. A reputable piercing salon sells hypoallergenic jewelry made of high quality gold or surgical titanium.

Other metals are impure and contain nickel. Nickel irritates the skin, especially with fresh piercings. Using impure metals for a new piercing increases the chance of infection or rejection. This is bad for your health and your professional reputation as a piercer.

If you know what type of jewelry you might want to replace after the piercing has healed, let your piercer know. They can give you an idea of how long you should wait and what are the best options. In addition, they may recommend different locations or sizes for the initial puncture.
