Emoticon piercing: this lip jewelry that makes us smile

The piercing you only see when you smile? This is called "emoticon piercing." Here you will find all the information you need to know before using this little gem that is crucial ...

An emoticon piercing, also known as a frenum piercing or a frenum piercing, is a piercing done inside the mouth, more specifically on the frenum of the upper lip. The frenum is located inside the upper lip, connecting it to the gum tissue.

Since the piercing is only visible when you smile, it is commonly referred to simply as a "smile piercing." In addition, emoticon piercing is one of the easiest piercing methods for both the piercer and the client, because the frenulum is made up of only thin mucous tissue. The lip heals quite quickly and rarely becomes inflamed. In addition, this part is not composed of nerves and is not traversed by blood vessels, which greatly limits the sensation of pain, contrary to what you might think.

It is very important to know: Emoticon piercings - like any other piercing for that matter - should only be done in a professional piercing studio or salon. Then a professional will check if your brake can be punctured, because it will not be possible in all cases. It should be minimally persistent. Piercings done in other conditions can lead to severe inflammation.

Emoticon piercing: how does it work?

Puncture of the frenum of the lip is not the most difficult thing in its implementation. While in the mouth, it is necessary to carry out a small rinse of the mouth to cleanse the inside of the mouth as much as possible.

To keep the frenum tight and provide enough space for the piercing, the upper lip is first lifted with special pliers. The piercing should never touch your lips or mouth with your fingers, as this can lead to contamination of this area. The piercing is then inserted using a hollow needle, through which medical steel jewelry is then inserted. Typically, the thickness of an emoticon piercing is 1,2 to 1,6 millimeters.

There is always a risk of breaking the brake when drilling. However, this should not happen in a professional piercing parlor. In this case, there is nothing to panic, the brake as a whole is restored in a few weeks!

How much does an emoticon piercing cost?

As with any piercing, the smile depends on the region you are doing it in, as well as the piercing parlor. Typically, you will have to pay between 30 and 50 euros for this piercing. The price usually includes not only the piercing itself, but also the first jewel made of surgical steel so that the hole does not heal properly, as well as care products. It is advisable to inform in advance at the salon of your choice.

Risks of emoticon piercing

Since the piercing of the frenum of the lip is carried out only through the mucous membrane, inflammation or other complications after a puncture are rare. Typically, an emoticon piercing will heal completely in two to three weeks.

However, because the frenum is very thin, the piercing can deteriorate over time. In addition, you may feel uncomfortable at first, especially while eating. But this is not a piercing to be done lightly, it can have serious and real consequences.

The biggest danger is that it can damage your teeth or gums over time. Because the piercing exerts constant pressure and friction, trauma may occur, the gums may retract, or tooth enamel may wear off.

In the worst case, piercing the frenum of the lip can even damage the bone below the gum line and thus cause chronic periodontitis, a condition that destroys the supporting tissue of the tooth. Therefore, from a dental point of view, piercing at the level of the frenum is not recommended.

It is important to have the right piercing jewelry to avoid damaging your teeth. Piercing is recommended when the balls are flattened inside or completely devoid of balls. Then your piercing will be the person who can best advise you on limiting the risks.

Emoticon piercing: all about healing and proper care

The emoticon piercing should heal completely in two to three weeks. Here, as with other piercings, it depends on the appropriate care. After piercing, you should pay attention to the following points:

  • Don't touch the piercing! The more you move or play with it, the higher your risk of inflammation. If necessary: Only touch the piercing with disinfected hands.
  • Spray the piercing with a mouth spray two to three times a day (after each meal) and then disinfect it with a mouthwash to prevent bacteria from building up. Spray and mouthwash can be purchased at piercing parlors or drugstores.
  • Brush your teeth regularly. But be careful not to accidentally rip off the piercing.
  • Avoid nicotine and alcohol until the piercing is completely healed.
  • Also, avoid acidic and spicy foods and dairy products at first.

Emoticon piercing: when to change the gem?

Once your emoji piercing is completely healed, you can replace the original gem that was inserted during the piercing with another gem of your choice. Unlike other types of piercings, such as earrings or belly button piercings, you definitely need to get it done with a professional. If you change the piercing yourself, you risk tearing the bridle.

Ball Retaining Rings (small ball rings) specially designed for emoji piercings have a flattened squeeze ball on the inside of the lip, which is much better for teeth and gums. As explained above, the thickness of the material should be between 1,2 mm and 1,6 mm. If it is larger, it rubs too hard against its teeth.

To risk your teeth and gums as little as possible, you can also wear a barbell (a lightweight barbell with a small ball at each end) as a decoration. The only problem: the piercing is barely noticeable, because the jewelry will be hidden by the upper lip. Thus, it will become rather a secret treasure that will be visible only to those people to whom you show it.
