What types of piercings are there?

Body piercings, from belly button piercings to surface anchors, are one of the coolest and most interesting types of piercings. They can be subtle, complementary, teasing or shocking - it all depends on how you wear them. Some of the most popular types of body piercings include:

  • Navel/navel
  • nipple
  • Microdermal/Surface
  • genital

Navel/navel piercing

Belly button or navel piercing is one of the most popular types of piercing today. Although the peak of popularity came in the 90s and early 2000s, navel piercings have not gone away. From Britney to Beyoncé, belly button piercings have retained their place in pop culture.

In the 90s, belly button piercings were a sex symbol. Now it is making a comeback as an elegant and trendy piercing with many more design and jewelry style options. This piercing is most commonly worn by women, but can be worn by men as well. In ancient Egypt, they were a sign of courage and masculinity.

Typically, these piercings are performed at the top of the belly button. Today, there are many options for jewelry, ranging from navel rings to barbells and Balinese pendants.

The navel piercing is safe and one of the least painful piercings. They have a lower failure rate than other surface piercings. Also, since they are a fleshy area with few nerve endings, piercing them is easy and painless. Complete healing may take 6-12 months.

nipple piercing

Nipple piercings are popular with both men and women. They can add flair, enhance sexiness, or add a touch of elegance.

Although they can be found throughout most of history, the popularity of nipple piercings in the Western world seems to date back to the Victorian period. The same period that brought us burlesque. They resurfaced again in the 1970s and have been going strong ever since.

Since the nipples are a sensitive area, piercing them can be more painful than other common areas such as ear piercings. Despite this, nipple piercings are popular with both men and women. Once the area is pierced, the jewelry does not cause pain. In fact, most people report a pleasant or arousing sensation from playing with nipple piercing jewelry.

The healing time of a nipple piercing is slightly longer, until complete healing takes 12-18 months. Luckily, they are easy to protect as they are usually covered by a shirt. However, before you pierce your nipples, make sure you are prepared to dedicate this extended period of postoperative care.

Most people get horizontal nipple piercings with a side bar or ring. Angled and vertical nipple piercings are less common, but still possible. Angled nipple piercings can complement a curvaceous figure. Consult with your piercer to choose the best option, but in the end it's best to choose the style you like.

Microdermal piercing

Microdermal piercing is different from other types of piercing. First, they can get anywhere on the surface of your body. Secondly, they attach differently than other piercings.

Instead of a piercing that goes in and out of one hole, a surface piercing is a single hole in the skin. The skin anchor is placed in the hole. The skin heals around the base of the anchor. Skin piercing jewelry is attached to the anchor.

Decoration and placement options are only limited by your imagination. People make necklaces to pierce the skin, attach horns to their heads, or “hover” simple beads on the skin.

Microdermal piercings require more maintenance than other types of piercings. They are more prone to both migrating and rejection than other types of piercings. In addition to requiring meticulous care, they are more prone to damage than other types of piercing, even after healing. As a result, you need to take extra care, such as covering them up if you're exercising.

Surface piercing

Surface piercings are similar to skin piercings. However, while the end product may look like dermal, the base is similar to a standard piercing. The piercer inserts a false barbell, making two holes, as with a conventional piercing. Only the ends of the bar are exposed, creating the appearance of skin anchors.

Surface piercings and jewelry are cheaper than skin piercings because they are less specialized. However, they don't last that long: the average lifespan of a surface piercing is only 1-2 years. After that, the body often begins to reject the piercing.

genital piercing

Intimate and seductive genital piercing is considered to be any piercing of the genitals. The types of piercings and jewelry vary greatly, as do the reasons for getting them. Genital piercing was a right of passage, an aesthetic enhancement or an increase in sexual pleasure and confidence.

While genital piercings are often thought of as piercings for young college-aged people, the ages of children are much more varied. Today, middle-aged women are just as likely to get this piercing to spice up their bedroom at home as are young men looking to experiment with their newfound sexuality.

People often find that genital piercings improve sensation and stimulation for themselves and/or their partners during intercourse. This is one of the main motivators for genital piercing. Elayne Angel of the Association of Professional Piercers gives reasons why people choose certain types of genital piercings, including:

  • Healing time
  • Transparency
  • sensation
  • Pleasure for yourself
  • Pleasure for a partner
  • piercing penetration
  • Sexual preferences
  • Activities (e.g. horseback riding, cycling)

Choosing the right genital piercing depends on a number of factors, including the list above and individual anatomy. You always want to consult with a piercing specialist to choose the right type of piercing for your genitals. As a general rule, we recommend that you also consult your doctor.

Selection of piercing jewelry

There are a number of factors to consider when shopping for piercing jewelry. Are you buying a new or healed piercing? The material and style of the jewelry requires careful selection for new piercings to promote healing and prevent problems.

You should also consider the appropriate types of jewelry for different types of piercings. And finally, you need to find the style that you like the most.

Piercing Bars

Barbells are one of the most popular piercing jewelry. They are a single metal rod that enters the skin through one hole and exits through another.

The name comes from the traditional appearance with metal balls at both ends of the stem. They look like miniature versions of vaudeville strongman bars.

As a rule, piercing bars are straight, curved or round. Umbilical rods usually have one beaded end and one larger ornamented end. Surface piercings also exist for surface piercings. They differ in that the entire rod is hidden, and only the ends are visible. With standard barbells, open part or most of the neck.

Piercings that use barbell jewelry include:

  • nipple piercing
  • belly button piercing
  • genital piercing
  • Surface piercing

Piercing rings

Rings are not as common for piercings as barbells. But they are far from unusual. Rings ranging from belly button rings to Prince Albert beaded rings work with most piercings.

Rings are any jewelry that completes or nearly completes a 360° ring. Common body piercing rings include captive bead rings, fixed bead rings, round barbells, and clicker rings.

Piercings that use barbell jewelry include:

  • nipple piercing
  • belly button piercing
  • genital piercing

Shields and pendants for piercing

Shields and pendants are reinforced piercing jewelry. Their purpose is as fluid as their styles. For example, a nipple shield can be used to highlight the nipple when it is open, or to make the piercing less visible when it is hidden by clothing.

Pendants, as the name suggests, are pieces that hang (or dangle) from the piercing. They range from simple to complex. The shield, on the contrary, bypasses the puncture, as a rule, in a circle or semicircle.

Body piercing using shields and pendants includes:

  • nipple piercing
  • belly button piercing
