How to get a navel piercing

From beach bums to #fitstagrammers, belly button rings are the piercing of the summer. Belly button piercing is one of the most popular types of piercing, whether it's ostentatious or kept under wraps.

With their high demand, there will always be people who want to make a quick buck or find shortcuts. The result is homemade navel piercing kits and online DIY piercing tutorials that put people and their piercings at risk.

Since belly button piercings are one of the least painful places, people sometimes find it easy to get pierced. Without proper preparation, this piercing is potentially dangerous.

The Importance of Seeking a Professional

When piercing a navel, you should always consult a professional piercer. The navel area contains many nerves and blood vessels, so an inappropriate piercing can lead to a bloody mess and/or long-term nerve damage.

In fact, not every belly button can be pierced. While most innies are, external navels can cause complications and usually don't. Sometimes, however, it is possible to pierce the very outer part of the navel, and not the skin above it. This is known as a true belly button piercing.

A professional piercer will tell you if a navel piercing is right for your body and, if not, may recommend a different type of piercing.

Professional masters not only make the piercing safe, but also provide a higher quality piercing. The placement is precise and the process is hygienic, ensuring a great looking piercing and proper healing.

Look for a piercing studio that adheres to strict hygiene measures and pierces with a needle, not a gun. A piercing gun is usually the sign of an untrained piercer and is a blunt and inaccurate piece of equipment.

How the navel is pierced

Navel piercing consists of 6 steps:

  1. Environmental/equipment sanitization
  2. clean surface
  3. mark target
  4. Pierce and jewelry insert
  5. Cleaning
  6. aftercare

Sanitization of the environment and equipment

Before the client arrives, the artist focuses on disinfection. The equipment is sealed in bags and disinfected in an autoclave that opens in front of the client. The area is cleansed and any surface that will touch exposed skin is wrapped.

Surface cleaning

When a client arrives, he takes a seat in the prepared area. The artist puts on new gloves and wipes the navel with an antiseptic wipe. This is an additional precaution to prevent infection.

mark target

The artist then uses a surgical marker to mark the puncture site. This is a good chance for the client to make sure the piercing is where they want it to be. In addition, it makes it easier for the master to be accurate, so he can focus on a thorough and correct piercing.

Pierce and jewelry insert

The moment of truth. Now the artist pierces the navel, inserting the decoration. This jewelry will remain until the piercing heals. After a full recovery, you can replace them with new jewelry. Jewelry for a new piercing is different from a healed piercing. Typically, the focus is on hypoallergenicity, minimal movement, irritation, and the likelihood of infection.

Clean (again)

Make no mistake, a piercing is a wound. So it doesn't hurt to be careful. The artist then wipes the navel one last time with an antiseptic wipe.

aftercare

The final role of the piercer is to advise you on piercing care. They usually provide a printed sheet of instructions and also talk about the process verbally. Following care instructions is important to ensure that your navel piercing heals safely and properly.

It may take 3 to 6 months for a belly button piercing to fully heal, and follow-up care continues throughout this time. If you have any questions or concerns during or about aftercare, please call or visit your stylist.

Types of navel piercing

There are several ways to pierce the navel:

  • Traditional
  • back
  • horizontal
  • Double/Multi
  • Real belly button piercing

 Traditional navel piercing

This is the most common type of belly button piercing. The piercing goes through the skin above the navel and into the opening of the navel. Usually this is a ring, a curved shield for a barbell, or a pendant as a decoration.

Some people will choose a deep navel. It is similar to a traditional piercing, except that it goes through a larger area and the tip protrudes above the belly button.

Reverse navel piercing

Similar to a traditional piercing, a reverse belly button pierces the bottom of the belly button instead. Sometimes referred to as a lower belly button piercing, it is usually a curved barbell or pendant.

horizontal

A horizontal piercing goes above the belly button and is usually a curved barbell placed horizontally. To actually go through a belly button piercing, piercers will perform a double horizontal belly button piercing. These are two piercings, one on each side of the navel and connected by one piece of jewelry. A double usually uses a barbell.

Double or multiple navel piercing

Double piercings are not always associated with one piece of jewelry. For example, a common double piercing is one traditional belly button and one reverse belly button. This leaves room for a lot of cool piercing jewelry combinations. A multi-piercing is any combination of more than two belly button piercings.

Real belly button piercing

The only piercing that pierces your real belly button, the real belly button goes straight through the protruding belly button. The decoration is usually a ring or a curved bar.
