After piercing her nose, a 21-year-old Brazilian woman was paralyzed in both legs due to a blood infection. Even if it was discovered and stopped in time, the young woman is now in a wheelchair.

Piercing my nose Barking Diaz never thought I would lose the ability to use my legs. A few weeks after the ring was placed in her nostril, the 21-year-old Brazilian woman notices that the area around the piercing is swollen and reddened. While she finally manages to control this minor infection with the ointment, she discovers that she has excruciating back pain. "I thought it was muscular, I didn't attach much importance to it.“, - says Layane. Unfortunately, the pain relievers no longer work and she decides to consult. Since the doctors could not find the source of the pain, the Brazilian woman did not worry anymore, until one day she felt her legs at all. She was urgently hospitalized, the test results for a young woman are dramatic: she both legs are paralyzed due to infection with Staphylococcus aureus.

Two months of recovery

Doctors believe the infection was caused by a piercing in the nose. "Staphylococcus aureus usually enters the body through the nasal passages. The surgeon asked me if I had a nose injury. He explained to me that the piercing was the gateway for bacteria to enter my body.“, - says Layane Diaz. But even if the infection is detected and stopped in time, Layan will spend the rest of his life in a wheelchair. "The operation stopped the spread of an infection that could have killed her.“, - recalls Dr. Osvaldo Ribeiro Márquez, the surgeon who took care of this at the clinic with the BBC... However, in fifteen years of his career, the doctor had never seen such a thing: “This can happen with complications. The piercing likely caused a skin infection that allowed bacteria to enter the bloodstream.«

Layane Diaz recovered two months before being discharged from the hospital. Devastated when she learned that she had lost the ability to use both legs, the young woman now learned to live with her handicap and regained her zest for life. "I met other young people in wheelchairs, I saw that I could be happy in this situation. I play sports, play basketball and handball.", Trusts Layana with the BBC... Signed by nearly 40 Instagram followers, the Brazilian regularly shares her photos to prove to her community that she also has the right to be happy in a wheelchair.

These photos prove that piercing rhymes with style.
