What are their features, what is their history and how are they characterized? Here collection of knowledge about diamonds.

Properties and characteristics of a diamond - what is a diamond really?

diamond it is a very valuable gem that forms many millions years in the structure of the earth. It is formed from crystalline carbon particles under conditions of high temperatures and extreme pressures. It is very rare, so the price for it reaches dizzying amounts.

The process of creating this gemstone is described in detail in the article: How and where are diamonds formed?

Diamond is an uncut stonewhich naturally has a medium sheen as well as a matte finish. After proper processing and polishing, the diamond acquires even greater value and is used in jewelry.

From generation to generation, various cutters have tried to cut the diamond in such a way that it allows the light entering the stone to emit one full beam of flashes, colors and reflections resulting from the splitting of natural rays. The art of diamond cutting has been perfected over the centuries, and the shape of the stones has changed over time. It was only in the XNUMXth century that it was adopted permanently brilliant cut, it replaced the one used so far power socket (see also other types of brilliant cut). Brilliant cut was considered pinnacle of craftsmentherefore it is also used for other minerals such as zircon.

Diamond and diamond - differences

diamond i sparkler for many people these are synonymous concepts, even synonyms. However, they are actually two different namesan indication two different items — although both are based on the same gem. So what is the difference between a diamond and a diamond?

How is a diamond different from a diamond?

Diamonds it's just... diamonds. However, for a diamond to form, the diamond must go through a grinding process, thanks to the matte surface and irregular shapes. Proper processing and shaping will result in a stone that can be immediately used in jewelry, such as a diamond engagement ring or sparkling engagement rings. So the most the key difference between diamond and diamond lies in the polishing process.

The weight of a diamond is not the only factor that determines its value.

Both the uniqueness and the quality of a diamond are determined by the so-called criterion 4Cwhich includes four steps. The first caratwhich determines the actual weight of the diamond. The greater the weight of a diamond, the higher its price. The next criterion is color. Diamonds are usually blue, black, brown and yellow. Colorless diamonds are the rarest in nature.. The GIA scale is used to determine the color. Starts with a letter D (pure diamond) and ends Z (yellow diamond). The third criterion is the so-called clarificationor, in other words, the transparency of the stone. The last one is purity, i.e. the absence of spots, as well as the absence of foreign bodies inside the stone.

To summarize, the quality of a diamond is determined by four features (4C) that determine the value and price of a diamond. Purity (), weight (), color (), cut ().

Clarity of diamonds

Clarity is the main characteristic that determines the value of a diamond. A smaller diamond with a higher clarity grade will have greater value than a larger diamond of lower quality. Obviously, the most valuable diamonds are perfectly clean. The ones in which no contamination is visible even under a microscope. Jewelry (engagement rings, wedding rings, earrings, pendants, etc.) uses the most popular diamonds, i.e. have inclusionsi.e. impurities visible under a magnifying glass magnifying the image by 10 times. Diamonds of the lowest purity grades (P) have impurities that are visible to the naked eye.

diamond time

Lots of diamonds expressed in carats (here we explain the terms carat, dot, mela in diamonds). One metric carat is equivalent to 200 mg or 0.2 g. The mass is given to two decimal places, and the abbreviation "ct". Below is the size of the diamonds, along with their carat weight, on a scale of approximately 1:1.

Diamond color

The American GIA scale indicates the color of a diamond in letters. from D to Z. The lower down the alphabet, the more yellow the color becomes. Of course, we are not talking about the colors of fantasy stones, but only about colorless diamonds.

In Poland, this concerns the trade in jewelry diamonds. Polish standard PN-M-17007: 2002. The international color scale adopted in it in the Polish version is consistent with the current nomenclature (International Diamond Council) and the corresponding letter marking (Gemological Institute of America), where diamonds are examined by gemologists. Therefore, the current use of commercial terms such as: "snow white", "crystal", "upper crystal", "cape", "river", etc., this is not true and does not comply with Polish rules. This practice is used by the owners of jewelry companies or shops who, unknowingly, want to mislead or deceive the buyer, show ignorance, act contrary to the law and violate the law in force in Poland, or demonstrate a complete lack of professionalism.

diamond cut

As stated above, diamonds are made completely naturallyand thus not all of them will be of the same value. This is also reflected in the price of an already cut diamond, i.e. a diamond. When grading a diamond, the aforementioned 4C scale is used, which includes carat, stone color, clarity, and clarity (mentioned earlier). All these criteria apply to a diamond, however, in this case, a different criterion is used to evaluate a stone - the cut of the stone.

Diamonds before processing almost without brilliance, boring. Only the right haircut will radiate light, shine, otherwise - life. This is after the diamond is properly polished, the diamond is shapedwhich is so beautiful not only due to the qualities acquired with "birth", but also due to the skillful human hand.

Jewelry terminology says that A diamond is a round diamond with a brilliant cut., i.e. one that contains at least 57 facets (56 + 1), which is described in more detail in the graph below, which shows this cut - and other popular ones.
