A trampoline accident left Rachel, then a high school sophomore, with a broken left arm, requiring eight months of surgery, three years of physical therapy and rehabilitation, and a series of infections and syndromes. This left behind an ugly scar that depressed her. At 18, she decided to rebuild her body by turning her scars into something she wanted to look at every day.

“I didn’t want to hide the surgical scars because they were and still are such an important part of who I am now, but I wanted to turn them into something I would be proud of,” she wrote.
