Meet Steph Alino, a student at our studio in Philadelphia. Like many tattoo students, she dreamed of becoming a tattoo artist since high school. Through college, restaurant work, and freelancing, Steph's passion for art and tattoo design has never left her. And when 2020 rolled around, she saw an opportunity to do just that. Just do it, how do you know it's time to start tattooing training

After college, Steph worked a boring job in a restaurant but managed to keep her creativity in her life: "I was actually doing art on the side and trying to get a job to make ends meet and also just freelancing." Even though her artistic freelance work still required her to work, Steph never stopped dreaming of becoming a tattoo artist. 

One day everything changed and she realized it was time to get serious about her art! She recalls: “I don’t know, I guess when 2020 came around, I was like, you know what, I’ll just do it. Let's just, let's just do it, and so far so good." When she got tired of struggling with a job she didn't like, she knew it was time to start learning how to tattoo.

What is it like to be your own boss?

One of the biggest changes for Steph was that she started working for herself instead of someone else's schedule to make ends meet. She says, "Being your own boss is like being in control of your time, your schedule, your job, and your clients." Being a tattoo artist means being your own boss and having all the freedoms that go with it. Being able to have this kind of flexibility can be a game changer and greatly improve the quality of your life. She says, “I didn't have confidence until I realized my work was good enough. I can really make a living doing this."
