What could be better than setting up an easel in the Tuscan countryside or working from a studio in Buenos Aires?

We do it for free. Or close to it.  

As part of To gather the best and most interesting resources and opportunities for artists, we delved into not only finding some exciting opportunities to strengthen your craft overseas, but those that offered at least partial funding. Both art and travel can be expensive. But knowing where to look can help ease some of that financial pressure.   

From Norway to Argentina, take a look at these seven fully or partially funded international artist residencies that will make you run for your passport.

The Jan van Eyck Academy, founded in 1948, provides artists, designers, curators, photographers, architects and writers from all over the world with the opportunity to come together, advance their research and create new work in a culturally rich program. For over 30 years, the Academy has focused on providing collaboration and leadership through residency exchanges instead of traditional art academy training.

LOCATION: Maastricht, Netherlands

Media: Fine arts, sculpture, new media, printmaking

Length: from 6 months to a year

FINANCING: Studio provided. Grants available for scholarship and production budget

DETAILS: Artists will receive recommendations from more experienced colleagues in residence. In return, a presentation and an exhibition are expected. Artists also have access to a private studio and apartment, an auditorium, gallery space and a cafe-restaurant.

Kolony is a Worpswede artist residence project that brings together artists, researchers, artisans and activists in a "colony" for periods ranging from one to three months. Since 1971, the organization has welcomed 400 artists and fellows from around the world to develop their work, learn, and grow within their discipline.

LOCATION: Worpswede, Germany

Media: Visual arts, sculpture, new media

Length: One to three months

FINANCING: Available grants. The artists paid for their travel and food expenses.

DETAILS: The artists are housed in private apartments in the countryside where children, partners and pets are allowed. They speak English and German.

DEADLINE: January next year

Est-Nort-Est's main priority is to encourage artistic exploration and experimentation in contemporary art. Artists will have access to a separate studio and shared home with other artists. The program attaches great importance to work in new cultural spaces and dialogue between artists from different backgrounds.

LOCATION: Quebec, Canada

STYLE: Modern Art

Media: Visual arts, sculpture, textile art, new media, painting, installation

Length: Two month

FINANCING: Scholarship of $1215 and accommodation provided.

DETAILS: Residences are held three times a year: in spring, summer and autumn.

 

The Villa Lena Foundation is a non-profit organization that supports contemporary artists working in the fields of art, music, cinema and other creative endeavors. Each year, they invite applicants to live and work in a 19th-century villa in the Tuscan countryside for two months to promote interdisciplinary dialogue between professional artists of all levels and backgrounds. The Villa Lena Foundation is a center for new research, joint discussions and innovative ideas.

LOCATION: Tuscany, Italy

Media: Visual arts, music, cinema, literature, fashion and other creative disciplines.

Length: Two month.

FINANCING: Includes accommodation, studio and half board (breakfast and dinner).

DETAILS: The artists stay at a thousand-acre estate with stunning views of vineyards and olive groves. Artists are asked to donate one work to the villa at the end of their stay, where it will be displayed on site.

360 Xochi Quetzal Artist Residency is a fairly new organization that provides its residents with free housing, studios and food. Located in Central Mexico, this charming mountain town is home to many artists who gather in cafes, ride horses in the mountains and gather by the lake to watch pelicans.

LOCATION: Chapala, Mexico

Media: Visual arts, new media, printmaking, sculpture, ceramics, textile art, photography.

Length: One month.

FINANCING: Enjoy free accommodation, wi-fi, all utilities, on-site laundry and weekly housekeeping. Each resident also receives a food stipend of 1,000 pesos. You will only need to pay for local transport, entertainment and additional meals.

DETAILS: The artists are housed in a hacienda-style house with private rooms and studios, as well as a shared living and dining area. All artists received desks and Wi-Fi, artists received professional easels, ceramic artists received access to a kiln, and a new floor loom was just purchased for the weavers.

 

The Nordic Artists Center was founded in 1998 and is funded by the Norwegian Ministry of Culture to bring together visual artists from all over the world. With its stunning, award-winning architecture and stunning views, this residence attracts artists from all over the world to focus on their work while taking in the surroundings. Over 1520 artists applied for seats last year, and only five residencies were available per session…so make sure your application is in perfect shape before submitting.

LOCATION: Dale Sunnfjord, Norway

Media: Visual arts, design, architecture and curators.

Length: Two or three months.

FINANCING: Residence at the Nordic Artists Center includes a monthly grant of $1200, housing and work space, and travel support of up to $725, to be reimbursed upon arrival.

DETAILS: The facilities of the center include private houses, wireless internet, general workshop, woodworking machine room, photo lab, ventilated painting room, etc. The workshop is also equipped with welding and printing equipment. They speak English and Norwegian.

 

In this new type of Artist-in-Residence program, artists select at least two different studios/workshops to visit in order to complete a proposed project, deepen techniques, and exhibit work. With many studios to live in, artists have the opportunity for a rich exchange of experience between both experienced and emerging artists.

LOCATION: Buenos Aires, Argentina

Length: At least two weeks.

FINANCING: Depending on the case, RARO may provide scholarships to foreign artists. Find more information .

DETAILS: The residencies cater for emerging, intermediate and established artists of all disciplines.
